Bruins Use Late-Game Turner Goal to Beat ASU, 1-0
October 22, 2023 | Women's Soccer
An 89th-minute goal by Reilyn Turner kept UCLA's winning streak intact, as the No. 2 Bruins won their 11th-straight to beat No. 24 Arizona State on the road, 1-0.
The Bruins (14-1, 8-0 in the Pac-12) were stymied for most of the game by Arizona State goalkeeper Pauline Nelles, who made nine saves on 23 UCLA shots, including a penalty kick in the 40th minute. But she could not stop Turner on the Bruins' final shot attempt, as the senior forward elevated to head Ally Lemos's corner kick into the back of the net for the game-winner. The goal was Turner's team-leading 10th of the season, and she moved into a tie for No. 5 all-time at UCLA with 16 career game-winning goals.
UCLA had its chances in the first half, notably on the penalty kick, which was earned after America Frias was fouled in the box. But Jayden Perry's shot was stopped by Nelles, UCLA's first penalty kick miss in 10 attempts this season. Nelles also had another big save with 30 seconds to play in the half, leaping up to tip away Lemos's shot that was headed for the upper right corner.
The Bruin defense also snuffed out multiple Sun Devils chances in the box in the first half, including a clearance of a strong service by Keri Matthews in the box in the 14th minute, and a Neeku Purcell save on Arizona State's lone shot on goal of the half in in the 32nd minute.
With Arizona State (10-3-4, 5-2-1) content to defend for most of the second half, the Bruins limited the Sun Devils to just two long range shots in the second half, both of which were handled by Purcell, who finished the game with three saves. UCLA, meanwhile, was aggressive in the second half with 18 shots. The Bruins appeared to take the lead in the 56th minute on a shot by Perry off a corner kick, but the goal was called off due to a foul. Perry nearly scored again in the 74th minute off another corner kick, but the Sun Devils cleared her shot off the line, and the rebound was also sent out of danger.
UCLA kept threatening with seven corner kicks in the half and finally broke through on its 11th of the game when Lemos found Turner at the 88:07 mark.

The Bruins return home for the final three games of the regular season, hosting California on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 4pm in the first game of a doubleheader with the UCLA men's soccer team. UCLA will also play Stanford Oct. 29 before wrapping up with USC on Nov. 4.When it's late in the game and you need a goal, an @allyylemos corner and @reilynturner header is inevitable.
