No. 5 UCLA (9-1, 3-0 in the Pac-12) returns home for a weekend series against the Oregon schools, hosting Oregon State (3-4-4, 0-2-1) on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7pm and Oregon (0-9-2, 0-3-0) on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1pm on Senior Day. ย Both games will take place at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Fans in attendance on Thursday can take a photo with the Bruins' 2022 NCAA Championship trophy, and the first 150 fans will receive a free UCLA Soccer scarf. On Sunday, the Bruin seniors will participate in a ย postgame autograph session. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
SENIOR SALUTE SUNDAY ย
Prior to Sunday's game against Oregon, UCLA will honor 14 seniors/graduate students - fifth-years Janae DeFazio and Sunshine Fontes; graduate transfers Ally Cook and Emily Pringle; fourth-years Jen Alvarado, Megan Edelman, Maya Evans, Jordyn Gather, Kelly McManus, Michaela Rosenbaum, My Haugland Sorsdahl, Reilyn Turner and MacKenzee Vance; and early graduate Faith Nguyen. Since 2020, these Bruins have compiled a four-year record of 60-5-7 (.882), won a NCAA Championship in 2023 and back-to-back Pac-12 titles in 2020 and 2021, and have led this year's squad to a Top 5 ranking all season. The senior ceremony will take place on the field before the game, at approximately 12:35pm. Fans are encouraged to arrive to the stadium by 12:30 so as to not miss the festivities. ย ย ย ย ย
UCLA SWEEPS IN WASHINGTON ย ย
UCLA swept through the Washington schools, defeating Washington, 3-2, in a game that had just one goal scored in the run of play and the final three goals scored via penalty kick, and shutting out Washington State, 2-0. Ally Cook scored a goal in each game, and Lexi Wright had a goal and assist in the win over the Cougars.ย
ALLY IS COOKIN'ย
Forward Ally Cook moved into the team lead in scoring with two goals over the weekend. Cook, who has scored four goals in her last three games, has seven goals overall to rank second in the Pac-12. She also ranks third in the conference in points scored with 15 and is the leader in conference games only with four goals and eight points. ย The Coto de Caza, Calif. native has totaled 12 goals as a Bruin since transferring from the University of Oregon in 2022. She scored 17 goals as a Duck, and her total of 29 career goals ranks second on the Bruin team behind only Reilyn Turner's 33 career goals. Cook has earned Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week twice this season and has been named to both the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News Teams of the Week once. ย ย ย ย
MCMAHON MAKES HISTORYย
Junior Quincy McMahon made history this week, becoming the first defender ever to win Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors three straight weeks. She is also one of just three players in Pac-12 history to win a weekly award in three consecutive weeks. McMahon helped lead the Bruins to a pair of road wins in Washington, including a 2-0 shutout win at No. 23 Washington State, during which she recorded her third assist of the season. McMahon and the Bruin defense limited both Washington and Washington State to single-digit shot totals, a feat they have accomplished in nine of the team's 10 games. ย ย ย ย ย
FONTES OUT FOR SEASON ย
Graduate midfielder Sunshine Fontes suffered an ACL injury on Sept. 28 at Washington, prematurely ending her season. Fontes finishes the year with five goals and 11 points in just nine games. She scored three goals in the win over Long Beach State on Sept. 7, moving up to No. 3 on UCLA's all-time list for career hat tricks with two. The 2022 All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-12 honoree finishes with 21 goals, 13 assists and 55 points in her career. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
TURNING OVER THE RECORD BOOKSย
With her goal at CSUN on Sept. 10, Reilyn Turner moved into sole possession of seventh place on UCLA's career goals list with 34. She needs just one more goal to move into a tie for fifth place with Sarah-Gayle Swanson (2000-03) and Staci Duncan (1998-2001). Turner also ranks in UCLA's Top 10 for career game-winning goals with 13 (tied for ninth) and career hat tricks with two (tied for third). This season, she leads the team in assists with four, just one behind the Pac-12 assists leader, and has secured a fourth consecutive double-digit point total with 10 points (3g, 4a). ย ย
OPPONENTS WITH LITTLE SHOT ย ย
UCLA has held opponents to single-digit shots in nine of the team's 10 games and has held seven teams to five shots or less. The Bruins' lockdown defense, which has a team goals against average of 0.70 and six shutouts, starts goalkeeper Neeku Purcell, center backs Lilly Reale and Jayden Perry and outside backs Quincy McMahon and Ayo Oke. ย ย
IN THE RANKINGS
UCLA remained at No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the fourth-straight week but have moved up one to No. 3 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll. ย ย
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Oregon State enters the week with a 3-4-4 record overall and is 0-2-1 in conference play. The Beavers are 0-2-3 in their last five games and have not won a game since beating UC Irvine 3-2 on Sept. 7. McKenna Martinez leads the beavers with four goals and 10 points. Goalkeeper Hailey Coll has three solo shutouts and a goals against average of 1.48. The Beavers are coached by Lauren Sinacola in her third season. ย ย
THE SERIES WITH OREGON STATE
UCLA has won seven in a row over Oregon State, including last year's road matchup, 5-0. Reilyn Turner had a hat trick in that contest, scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, including the opening goal just 49 seconds into the match. Turner also added an assist in the second half to finish the game with seven points. OSU has never beaten UCLA in Westwood and last won over the Bruins in 2015. ย ย
SCOUTING THE DUCKS
Oregon enters the week seeking its first victory of the season. The Ducks, who have 15 freshmen on their roster, are 0-9-2 overall and 0-3 in Pac-12 play and are being outscored by a 24-6 clip. Six different Duck players have scored a goal this season. Goalkeeper Maddy Goldberg leads the Pac-12 with 49 saves and a 5.44 saves per game average. The Ducks are coached by Graeme Abel in his fourth season. ย ย
THE SERIES WITH OREGON
UCLA is unbeaten in the last 16 matchups with Oregon and won 3-1 in Eugene last year behind goals from Sofia Cook, Sunshine Fontes and Kali Trevithick. The Ducks' last win over UCLA came at home in 2006. ย ย
FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY
Several Bruins spent the offseason playing for their respective national teams in tournaments around the world. Head coach Margueritte Aozasa coached the U.S. Under-23 team at the Thorns Preseason Tournament in March in Portland, Oregon, and was joined by players Lilly Reale, Quincy McMahon, Sunshine Fontes, Reilyn Turner, Neeku Purcell and Ayo Oke. In May, Ally Lemos and Sofia Cook played for the U.S., and Val Vargas played for Mexico at the 2023 Concacaf Under-20 Championships in the Dominican Republic. With Vargas in the starting lineup, Mexico beat the U.S. in the final, 2-1, to capture the championship. Vargas is one of three Mexican Under-20 National Team players on the Bruin squad, along with sophomores Bridgett Marin-Valencia and America Frias, who each played with Mexico at the 2022 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Also playing in that 2022 Under-20 World Cup were Reale, Purcell and Oke. Vargas, Marin-Valencia and Frias are back with the Bruins after missing a week while at training camp with Mexico's U-20 squad. Freshman Maya Leoni was out last week at Colombia's U-17 national team camp in Bogotá. ย ย ย ย ย
