UCLA went 1-0 this past week with a 10-8 double overtime win at No. 3 USC on Saturday (Nov. 11) to end the 2023 regular season. It marked the Bruins' first undefeated MPSF (6-0) and regular season (23-0) since 2015.
Real Vergara, an attacker out of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Colegio Modular, had another stellar outing against USC with a game-high five goals. He has now scored 15 goals this season in the three wins over the Trojans. In the come-from-behind win (down 4-1 late in the second quarter), Real Vergara scored the game-tying goal with 6.5 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Scoring exactly half of the team's goals, he also added two steals and drew one exclusion (in the fourth quarter). His final steal was on the Trojans' last possession of the second overtime with the Bruins leading by two and under a minute remaining.
Larsen, a utility out of Lafayette, Calif., and Campolindo HS, scored the game-winning goal with 0:20 left in the first overtime period to help the Bruins complete the first unbeaten regular season in the MPSF since 2015. He also had a field block in the first OT to help keep the Trojans scoreless in the extra periods.
This is Real Vergara's and Larsen's second career MPSF award.
