NORMAN, Okla. – Junior Omar Morales on the UCLA men's golf team has been named the SwingU College Player of the Month in Division I for October, announced in partnership with the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
Morales closed out his fall season shooting under par in eight of nine rounds for three top-5 finishes at the Hamptons Intercollegiate (t-5th, -5), Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (t-1st, -11) and The Cal Poly Invitational (2nd, -9). All three events came in the month of October.
At the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate from Oct. 13-15, Morales claimed the second medal of his career with 15 birdies and round scores of 68-68-69. It was the second-lowest 54-hole score of his career behind his other medal performance at the El Macero Classic where he shot 203. Morales was also awarded Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Week honors following his victory in Georgia.
Morales was UCLA's top finisher in its final fall event at The Cal Poly Invitational from Oct. 30-31 where he placed runner-up at 9-under with round scores of 70-68-69. The Puebla, Mexico native was the Bruins' top golfer and had his team positioned in first place through 36 holes. UCLA went on to tie for second as a team.
Morales rebounded from a t-58th spot at the Husky Invitational to open the year with a top-5 placement at the Hamptons Intercollegiate. Competing as an individual, Morales shot 5-under for the tournament with round scores of 69-69-73.
Only twice in his final nine rounds of the fall season did Morales shoot 70 or worse. He closed out Fall 2023 with a 70.5 stroke average, which was good for second on the team. Morales and the Bruins resume play on Jan. 14 at The Copper Cup at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona.
