HONOLULU – Freshman Sebastian Mack scored a team-leading 16 points and junior Lazar Stefanovic added 13 points as the UCLA men's basketball team defeated Chaminade University, 76-48, at the Allstate Maui Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
UCLA had dropped into the tournament's consolation bracket on Monday night after losing to No. 4-ranked Marquette, 71-69.
Mack scored 25 points on Monday night against No. 4-ranked Marquette, and the freshman from Chicago followed that effort with a 16-point and six-rebound performance against the host Silverswords on Tuesday, on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa (SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center). Mack also totaled a team-leading five steals in the victory.
Sophomore Adem Bona totaled 12 points, six rebounds and two assists for UCLA (4-1), while freshman Aday Mara registered six points, a team-leading 10 rebounds and two blocks in just under 15 minutes.
"I just wanted to get a win," said Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach. "We are so young, so I don't know what I'm going to get from anybody at any given time. We're still settling in. I know what I'm going to get from Lazar. We're plus 39 in his 31 minutes. Right now, with the seven freshmen, you just don't know what you're going to get. I was up all night watching them. That's just how I do things. Our preparation, I was concerned."
UCLA opened Tuesday afternoon's game on a scorching 28-4 scoring run through the first nine minutes. The Bruins' margin spiked to 24 points midway through the opening half. Redshirt senior Kenneth Nwuba made a layup, before Stefanovic drilled a 3-pointer, and Mack followed with a layup off a turnover by Chaminade to close the opening scoring run.
The Silverswords (1-4) followed with a 14-2 scoring run, trimming UCLA's lead to 12 points (30-18) at the 6:40 mark in the first half. Mara's hook shot off an offensive rebound put the Bruins ahead, 32-18, with 4:07 remaining before halftime. The Bruins entered the locker room at the break with a 36-21 advantage.
Chaminade trailed 50-37 with 13:11 left in regulation, before UCLA put together a 22-7 scoring run over the game's next 10 minutes.
The Bruins outscored Chaminade by a 40-27 tally in the second half. UCLA shot nearly 49 percent from the field in Tuesday's win, connecting on 30 of 62 shot attempts and 7 of 22 attempts from 3-point distance. UCLA limited Chaminade to 26 percent shooting from the field (15-for-58).
Chaminade junior Jamir Thomas finished with a team-leading 17 points for the Silverswords, sinking 5 of 11 shots from 3-point range. Thomas made 6 of 14 total shots and had four steals against UCLA.
UCLA will play in the Allstate Maui Invitational's fifth-place contest against Gonzaga (3-1) on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. HT (9 p.m. PT). The Bruins' game against Gonzaga will be nationally televised on ESPN2. UCLA's radio broadcast will be available in Southern California on AM 570 (KLAC).
