Defending Champs Earn No. 1 National Seed

November 06, 2023 | Women's Soccer

For the second consecutive season, the UCLA women's soccer team (16-1-1) has earned a No. 1 national seed in the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The defending national champions and 2023 Pac-12 champions will host Big West champion UC Irvine (8-7-6) in the NCAA first round on Friday, Nov. 10 at 6pm at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. By virtue of their No. 1 seed, the Bruins would be in line to host through the quarterfinals.

The winner of the UCLA-UC Irvine match will advance to the second round to face the winner of No. 8 seed Gonzaga (13-3-2) vs. Idaho (12-4-2). In the other half of the quadrant are No. 4 seed Xavier (14-3-4), No. 5 seed Nebraska (14-3-3), Tennessee (8-6-4) and South Dakota State (13-3-3).

This is UCLA's 27th overall and eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins have a 74-20-7 all-time NCAA record and have advanced to the Round of 16 or beyond in nine of the last 10 seasons, winning the 2022 and 2013 NCAA titles and making four College Cup appearances (2022, 2019, 2017 and 2013).

After winning the Championship in her first year, second-year head coach Margueritte Aozasa has continued her winning ways, leading UCLA to its 14th Pac-12 title with a 10-0-1 conference record. The Bruins lead the conference in both goals scored (52) and shutouts (11). Reilyn Turner ranks second in the Pac-12 in goals scored (10) and points (26), while Ally Cook ranks fourth in goals with nine. Quincy McMahon is tied for the conference lead in assists with seven.

This will be UC Irvine's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance. They have won the Big West Championship in three consecutive years and captured this year's title after shutting out three opponents in the conference tournament. The Anteaters beat Cal Poly in the final, 1-0.

UCLA and UC Irvine met earlier in the season on Aug. 27 at Irvine, with the Bruins scoring two goals in each half to secure a 4-0 victory.

Tickets for Friday's first round match will go on sale on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at uclabruins.com/tickets. Advance sale prices are $12 for adults and $10 for youth. Student tickets are $8 with valid ID. Groups of 15 or more can purchase tickets for $10/person. On game day, tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth and groups, and $8 for students.
