UCLA Rolls Past Hawai'i, 85-46
December 21, 2023 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2/2 UCLA women's basketball team used a strong opening half to comfortably beat the University of Hawai'i 85-46 on Thursday afternoon in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
With the win UCLA improves to 11-0 on the season, their best start to a season since the 2019-20 when the Bruins started 16-0.
Four Bruins finished in double figures on Thursday afternoon. Charisma Osborne led the way with 17 points off of 6-for-10 shooting from the field. Lauren Betts finished right behind her with 16 points and seven rebounds, Kiki Rice had 14 points, and Londynn Jones finished with 12 points.
The Bruins never surrendered the lead after trailing 3-2 early on. Offensively, UCLA prioritized getting the ball down low to leading scorer Lauren Betts early and often, as she scored eight of the Bruins' first 10 points.
After Hawai'i scored their initial basket, the Bruins went on a 12-0 run, forcing the Rainbow Wahine to take a timeout. Fresh out of the timeout, Hawai'i scored their second basket of the game, making it a 16-6 game in favor of the Bruins before Londynn Jones answered immediately on the other end with a triple of her own to re-establish UCLA's 13-point lead, 19-6 with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter. To cap off the quarter, Amanda Muse tipped the ball up and in the basket as time expired, and the Bruins led 27-6.
UCLA continued to dominate on both ends of the floor in the second quarter. In the opening minutes of the quarter Kiki Rice picked off two Rainbow Wahine passes, while Jones added another steal, and the Bruins led 36-11 with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Bruins controlled the pace for the remainder of the half and took a 45-16 lead into the halftime break courtesy of a Rice mid-range jumper that she made with two seconds to go.
To begin the third quarter, UCLA used a 12-4 run to stretch their lead out to 37 points, 57-20. Over the opening three minutes, the Bruins were 5-for-5 from the field, including Betts, who made both of her shots to give her 16 points at that point off of 8-for-10 shooting from the field. The Bruins closed the third with a 65-29 lead as Jones made two 3-pointers as part of a team-high eight-point quarter.
Two minutes into the final quarter, Charisma Osborne drilled a corner three, giving UCLA a 68-31 lead. With the three Osborne tied Kari Korver and Lisa Willis for the most three-pointers made in school history.
Gabriela Jaquez capped the scoring for the Bruins with a second-chance bucket with 35 seconds remaining to give the Bruins a 39-point win, 85-49.
