MVB Swings Past Beach in Four

The No. 4 UCLA men's volleyball team (11-1) took down No. 2 Long Beach State (6-2) in a non-league match held on Friday night before a sellout crowd of over 4,000 fans in Long Beach. Scores of the contest were 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23. Ethan Champlin led three Bruins in double-digit kills on the night, with 12, and added four blocks. Alex Knight, with 11 kills, and Merrick McHenry, who finished with 10 and five blocks, were also in double figures. Long Beach outhit the Bruins .333 to .276, but the Beach had 21 service errors. UCLA out aced the Beach, by a 6-3 count, and won the battle at the net, 11.0 total blocks to 8.5.
In set one, Long Beach broke a 5-all tie by scoring four of the next five points. UCLA battled back to even the score at 10-all. The Beach answered with three straight to go up 10-13. The Bruins narrowed the deficit to 12-14, after an Ido David swing. Beach then rattled off another run of three straight to open the gap up to 12-17. A Champlin kill sliced the margin to 15-19. The Beach then cashed in several Bruin errors down the stretch for a 18-25 win. UCLA hit .167 for the set to .517 for the home team.
UCLA took advantage of two Beach errors to break a 7-all tie and move into a 9-7 lead to begin set two. Long Beach rallied to even the score at 11-all. Down 14-15 at the media timeout, UCLA put together five straight points behind the serve of Andrew Rowan -- Champlin kill, Rowan ace, David/McHenry/Champlin block, Champlin block solo and a McHenry/David block -- to advance into a 19-15 lead. McHenry's kill made it 22-18. J.R. Norris IV's swing pushed UCLA to set point, at 24-21. A Beach service error ended the set at 25-21.
Long Beach stormed out to a 0-4 lead to begin set three. UCLA regrouped and used a couple of Champlin kills to even the score at 8-all. A Beach error and a Guy Genis ace put UCLA up 10-8. Beach came back to level the score at 11-all. The Bruins then tallied four straight on a McHenry kill, a Knight/Grant Sloane/Rowan block, a Beach error and a Knight kill for a 15-11 edge. After the Beach sliced the gap to 18-16, Knight delivered a kill for a 19-16 lead. The home team battled to get within 21-20. Champlin's kill stopped the run, but the Beach was able to even the score at 23-all after a couple of Bruin errors. With Rowan on the service line, Champlin spiked a Beach overpass and then teamed up with McHenry for a block and a 25-23 win. UCLA totaled seven blocks in the frame.
