Following the first victory of her career at The Match in the Desert on Jan. 23 and her two match play victories versus then-No. 21 USC last week at The Battle for the Bell, sophomore Caroline Canales jumped eight spots in GolfStat's individual rankings to No. 26.
Zoe Antoinette Campos is ranked at No. 11.
Spring Has Sprung
UCLA is on a roll to open the spring portion of its 2022-23 season, claiming two medals at The Match in the Desert and the inaugural Battle for the Bell over crosstown rival USC.
In its last stroke play event at The Match in the Desert, every Bruin competing had contributed to UCLA's counting score, including Phoebe Yue and Yuki Yoshihara who tied for fourth in the rotation with a 2-over 74. The senior cleaned up their round on the back nine, shooting a collective 4-under after the turn. Yoshihara had three birdies while Yue had two.
At The Battle for the Bell, Yoshihara was one of three Bruins to each win both of their matches, joining Canales and Campos.
Two-Time Defending UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week
Canales' strong performances over the last two weeks have yielded a pair of UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week awards. Canales has shot under par in three of her last four stroke play rounds dating back to the Nanea Pac-12 Preview in the fall, averaging just 69.5 strokes per round in that stretch.
She is also the only Bruin who is a perfect 4-0-0 in match play competition this season following a 2UP victory over USC's Malia Nam in round one of the Battle for the Bell and 5&4 win over Brianna Navarrosa in round two.
C.C. Seeking Birdies
In her last stroke play round at The Match in the Desert, Canales shot a career-low 7-under 65. She totaled eight birdies and just one bogey in her round, shooting a 4-under 32 on the front nine with a string of three consecutive birdies on holes 5-7.
Canales is under par on the season at 2-under (790 strokes) with a team-best 71.8 scoring average in her 11 rounds. She has finished under par in her last two tournaments.
Canales is the only Bruin to have a counting score in each and every round of UCLA's season. She also leads the Bruins with three top-5 finishes.
