No. 12 UCLA Clinches Omaha Series With 23-0 Saturday Win

February 18, 2023 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Sophomore righty Alonzo Tredwell delivered six shutout innings and a quartet of Bruins launched home runs as UCLA won its series over Omaha with a 23-0 result on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Bruins (2-0) controlled the game from start to finish, plating a run in the bottom of the first and ultimately scoring in seven of eight offensive frames. UCLA put up a crooked number in five separate innings, including an eight-spot in the seventh.

Six separate Bruins collected multiple hits on Saturday, including three-hit days from sophomore shortstop Cody Schrier (3-5, four runs), redshirt sophomore first baseman AJ Salgado (3-7, five RBIs) sophomore second baseman Duce Gourson (3-6, four RBIs), and sophomore DH Jack Holman (3-5, two runs).

Junior third baseman Kyle Karros (3-4, five RBIs) and junior right fielder JonJon Vaughns (2-3, four RBIs) were also difference-makers with bats.

The Bruins built up a comfortable 8-0 lead by the end of the third inning thanks to a pair of multi-run rallies.

UCLA plated three in the second inning on the power of back-to-back homers from Vaughns and Schrier. Vaughns teed off on a 3-2 offering, sending it to the top of the Gifford Hitting Facility in right field for a two-run shot. Schrier followed with a line shot to left that cleared the wall in left-center field. The two homers were UCLA's first two roundtrippers of the year.

Karros provided the big swing of the next rally, lofting a 3-1 offering way over the wall in left center field for a three-run homer.

The Bruins pushed the lead into double digits in the sixth as senior catcher Darius Perry (1-3, two RBIs), Vaughns, and Salgado all collected RBI knocks.

The game reached rout territory in the seventh, as UCLA sent 12 batters to the plate as part of an eight-run rally. Salgado and Gourson each drove in three runs during the frame, with Salgado legging out a bases-loaded triple and Gourson sending a moon shot to right field for his first homer of the year.

Tredwell, who earned Freshman All-America honors in 2022 as UCLA's closer, was masterful in his first collegiate start. The Coto de Caza, Calif. native scattered four hits while allowing no runs or walks. He established a new career-high with 10 strikeouts, becoming the first Bruin this season to reach the double-digit K mark.

The Mavericks (0-2) rarely threatened against Tredwell. The visitors' best chance against him came in the fifth-inning after a one-out double from Cam Frederick, but Tredwell came back with back-to-back swinging strikeouts to extinguish the threat.

Tredwell retired 10 consecutive batters at one point between the second and fifth innings, and held Omaha to an 0-5 line with runners in scoring position.

The bullpen followed with three scoreless frames, as freshman Finn McIlroy, sophomore Chris Aldrich, and senior Josh Hahn all chipped in a shutout inning. Collectively, the trio faced just one over the minimum. McIlroy โ€“ making his NCAA debut โ€“ struck out the side in the seventh.

UCLA and Omaha conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Bruins will honor the 10th anniversary of the 2013 National Championship squad in a pregame ceremony.

NOTES: UCLA's 23 runs were the most in a shutout win in program history (prev: 22-0 vs. Long Beach State on Apr. 12, 1978) ... The 23-0 result was tied for the largest margin of victory in any game for UCLA under 19th-year head coach John Savage (last: 25-2 vs. Harvard on Mar. 18, 2022) .... This marks the first time under Savage that UCLA has had at least one 20-run game in three consecutive seasons.ย
