No. 1 UCLA Cruises Past Maryland in 12-2 Run-Rule Win
March 20, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 1-ranked UCLA baseball team rolled to a dominant 12-2 win over Maryland in Friday night's series opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins (19-2, 7-0 Big Ten) blew the game open with a six-run seventh inning, pushing the margin to 10 and securing their fifth run-rule victory of the season.
Eight of UCLA's nine starters recorded a hit, with four Bruins turning in multi-hit performances. Cashel Dugger set the tone early, launching a first-inning grand slam, his second of the year, as part of a two-hit night.
Payton Brennan, Dominic Cadiz, and Phoenix Call each collected a pair of hits while Roch Cholowsky drove in two runs and scored twice in his 1-for-4 performance
Dean West reached base three times and picked up two RBIs on bases-loaded hit-by-pitches, highlighting a night in which the Bruins were plunked eight times.
Logan Reddemann (6-0) delivered another solid outing, earning his sixth win in as many starts. The right-hander struck out seven, walked just one, and allowed two earned runs on eight hits.
UCLA batted around in the bottom of the first, erupting for five runs on four hits, capped by a towering grand slam from Dugger. Cholowsky was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and Levu followed with a single through the right side to put runners at the corners. Down 0-2 in the count, Martin ripped a double down the left-field line to plate the game's first run. Brennan was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Dugger, who punished a hanging changeup and launched it onto the roof of the hitting facility in right for a grand slam, punctuating the five-run outburst.
Maryland scratched across a run in the third when Brayden Martin smacked an RBI double down the left-field line.
The Bruins got that run back in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the run right back across when West drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Gasparino, who had opened the inning with a sharp single through the left side.
The Terrapins answered in the sixth, stringing together three straight singles to bring a run home.
Ian May took over in the seventh after Reddemann's strong outing and worked a scoreless frame, pitching around a walk and a base hit to keep the lead intact.
UCLA put the game away in the bottom of the seventh, erupting for six runs to invoke the run rule and stretch the margin to 10 after seven innings. Dugger, Cadiz, and Call opened the frame with three straight singles to load the bases, and West was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. Cholowsky then worked a 3-1 count before shooting a single up the middle to drive in two more. Levu was hit by a pitch to keep the pressure on, and West came home on a wild pitch to extend the lead. With runners on second and third, Brennan delivered the final blow, punching a two-run single through the right side to end the game.
The Bruins return to Jackie Robinson Stadium tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT for game two of the series. Live coverage will be available on B1G+.
