MVB Wins Seventh Straight

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team (16-1, 3-0) returned to action in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) with a sweep against Concordia-Irvine (5-10, 0-3) on Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the match were 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.
The Bruins hit .449 for the match and held CUI to a Bruin opponent season-low .039 attack percentage. Zach Rama, Ido David and Merrick McHenry each registered eight kills to lead the way for UCLA. The 16-1 start is the best by a Bruin team since the 1998 squad opened the season with 16 straight wins. The same two teams will battle again in an MPSF match on Friday night at CUI in Irvine at 7 p.m.
In set one, UCLA snapped a 12-all tie with points off of a service error and a Guy Genis / Ethan Champlin block. A David kill and an Andrew Rowan ace upped the margin to 18-13. Back-to-back kills by Alex Knight put UCLA up 20-14. Another David smash put UCLA ahead 22-15. Rama put one away for a 24-16 lead. A block by Rowan / Rama / Genis finished off the set at 25-16. The Bruins hit .500 for the frame.
The Bruins opened up set two by taking a 6-3 lead after a Champlin swing. Genis' kill made it 8-4. A McHenry spike and another Rowan ace lifted the Bruins into a 12-6 advantage. A block by Knight / Genis put UCLA ahead 18-11. Rama's two kills made it 23-14. The Bruins won the set on a block by Knight / McHenry / Cole Ketrzynski at 25-16.
UCLA surged to a 11-6 lead to begin set three. A David / Genis block put UCLA up 16-9. A couple of David aces lifted the Bruins to a 21-10 edge. Two kills by Cooper Robinson, for points 24 and 25, ended the set at 25-14. UCLA hit. 591 for the frame.
Troy Gooch topped the Bruins with nine digs. Rowan finished with 36 set assists on the night to go with a couple of aces. He now has at least one ace in each of the last six matches. Genis recorded five blocks and has totaled 20 over the last five matches. McHenry hit .538 for the match which marked the fourth straight contest in which he has registered over .500. UCLA out aced CUI 4-0 and out blocked the Golden Eagles 11.5 to 0.0. This was the third time this season that UCLA has held an opponent under .100 hitting percentage.
