MVB Stuffs Stanford in Three Sets

The No. 3 UCLA men's volleyball team won its 20th match of the season in dominant fashion in a sweep at No. 10 Stanford on Friday night. Scores of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match were 25-12, 25-12, 25-12.
The Bruins (20-2, 5-0) recorded their second-highest hitting percentage of the season, at .537, while siding out at a 92.1% rate. Stanford (9-9, 2-3) hit a Bruin opponent season low -.076 percentage. Ido David led the way for UCLA with 12 kills while hitting .556. Merrick McHenry added a career-high five aces as the Bruins out served the Cardinal 8-1 in aces for the contest. Guy Genis contributed eight blocks as the Bruins won the battle of the net with a season-best total of 15.0 blocks to 3.0 for Stanford.
In set one, UCLA surged to an 8-3 advantage after an ace from David. Stanford closed to 10-6, but the Bruins used Ethan Champlin's tough serve to go up 14-7. UCLA led 16-8 following back-to-back swings by David. A block by Alex Knight, Genis and Andrew Rowan made it 19-9. Another ace from David lifted the Bruins into a 22-9 lead. Kills by David and Knight ended the set at 25-12. UCLA hit .619 for the frame and David totaled seven kills.
McHenry fired a pair of aces in helping the Bruins storm out to an 8-2 lead in set two. A solo block by Genis made it 12-4. Champlin's spike put UCLA up 16-7. A block by Genis / David expanded the margin to 20-10. McHenry's ace put UCLA up 21-10. A block and a kill by Genis produced the final two points of the set for the Bruins and a 25-12 win.
A couple more McHenry aces helped launch UCLA out in front 9-2 to begin set three. The lead grew to 12-2 after back-to-back blocks by Knight and Genis. Genis' kill made it 15-5. Champlin's swing put the Bruins in charge at 18-8. Zach Rama's cross court spike resulted in a 23-11 lead. A Cardinal service error was followed by an attack error and another 25-12 Bruin win.
