Bruins Advance to Second Round with Win over Sacramento State, 67-45

March 18, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Basketball advanced to the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament after defeating Sacramento State 67-45 in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Saturday.

The Bruins and Hornets were tied at 2-2 fifty seconds into the game but, after a layup from senior Camryn Brown (Q1, 8:58), UCLA led for the remainder of the game.

Three Bruins were in double figures; Kiki Rice scored 15 points on an efficient 6-for-11 shooting in just 22 minutes on the floor. The freshman swiped three steals in the winning effort. Emily Bessoir (14 points) and Charisma Osborne (11 points) added 11 buckets in the game.

UCLA out-rebounded the Hornets 47-32 in the game; Osborne grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Bruins forced 11 turnovers and scored 11 points off those Hornet missteps. UCLA only had five turnovers in the game, and the Bruins did not allow a single point on the break.

Quarter one was all Bruins. Rice led the way with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, knocking down a triple and an and-one free throw in the period. Six Bruins got on the board in the first.

Osborne made her presence felt on both ends of the floor; the 5-foot-9 shooting guard blocked a Hornet and raced down court where she then knocked down an open elbow jumper.

Emily Bessoir got it going in the second quarter, scoring eight points in six minutes on the court. The German forward was 3-for-4 from the field, including two triples in three attempts.

Osborne had eight rebounds in the second (6 DREB, 2 OREB); the Bruins held a 23-12 advantage on the boards going into the break.

The Bruins took care of the basketball in the third, going the full 10 minutes without a single turnover. UCLA held the Hornets to .307 shooting (4-for-13 FG) in the quarter, getting it done on the defensive end. Osborne came up with a block on Kahlaijah Dean at the top of the arc; the Hornet guard grabbed her own rebound and attempted a second shot Lina Sontag sent that attempt nearly to half court as the Bruins corralled the ball.

The Bruins only shot .300 in the period (6-for-20), but the team led 54-34 heading into the final frame.

UCLA kept its foot on the gas in the fourth and stifled any hope of a Hornet comeback. Gabriela Jaquez had six points and three rebounds, leading the Bruins in both categories in the quarter.

Osborne secured her sixth double-double of the season with just over three minutes on the clock.

Jaquez scored the final four points for the Bruins; UCLA came away with the 22-point win at home.

UP NEXT: No. 5-seed Oklahoma (Mar. 20)

The Bruins face off against No. 5-see Oklahoma, who defeated the University of Portland 85-63 in their first-round matchup Saturday in Pauley.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PT on Monday, Mar. 20, and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
