The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA moved into first place in the Pac-12 standings after sweeping Arizona last weekend at home:
  • UCLA recorded a 5-1 in Friday's series opener against Arizona. The Wildcats got a leadoff homer in the first, but UCLA responded with a four-spot in the bottom half and held the visitors off the board the rest of the way. Junior third baseman Kyle Karros had a pair of doubles to lead the Bruins offensively, including an RBI two-bagger to tie it up in the first. UCLA made several key defensive plays, none more important than a bases-loaded unassisted double play by second baseman Duce Gourson on a soft liner in the seventh. Jake Brooks picked up the win, limiting Arizona to two hits and no runs after the leadoff homer. Cody Delvecchio was UCLA's top performer out off the pen, facing the minimum over 1 2/3 innings.ย
  • The Bruins clinched the series with a 7-5 Saturday win. UCLA used a six-run fifth inning to erase an early deficit and take the lead for good, sending 11 batters to plate during the rally. Carson Yates had the biggest swing of the inning, a go-ahead three run homer to left field. JonJon Vaughns and Darius Perry added RBI singles, and Vaughns later hit a solo home run. UCLA's bullpen combined for 6 2/3 innings with just one earned run against.ย
  • UCLA finished off the sweep with a 6-4 Sunday win. The Bruins scored in each of their final five offensive innings to take control of the game. Cody Schrier (3-4, two doubles) and Jack Holman (3-4, two runs) led UCLA offensively while Kelly Austin pitched into the sixth inning while allowing just one earned run. Bruin relievers had to make some big pitches in the late innings. Jake Saum inherited a bases-loaded jam in the seventh and came up with back-to-back Ks against Arizona's three and four-hole hitters to escape undamaged, and Cody Delvecchio pitched out of a two-on jam in the eighth.ย
  • For the series, UCLA outscored Arizona 18-10, out-hit them .260 to .239, and had a 2.67 to 6.38 advantage in team ERA. The Wildcats left 31 runners on base over the weekend, hitting the double-digit mark in each game (10-10-11).
  • Jack Holman (.556/.615/.778, three runs) and Kelly Austin (1.69 ERA, 7 Ks in 5.1 IP) were nominated for Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.ย
Off to a Hot Startย ย  ย
At 15-3, UCLA's 18-game start to the 2023 season ranks among the best in program history. The Bruins' 15 wins are the most through 18 games since the 2013 season (in which UCLA ultimately won the National Championship). Overall, it marks the seventh time in UCLA lore that the Bruins have won at least 15 games to this point in the season:
  • 2013: 15-3 (ended 49-17, NCAA Champions)
  • 2010: 18-0 (ended 51-17, NCAA runner-up)
  • 1997: 16-1-1 (ended 45-21-1, College World Series)
  • 1982: 15-3 (ended 38-27, no postseason)
  • 1978: 15-3 (ended 39-20, Pac-8 Playoffs)
  • 1969: 16-1-1 (ended 42-12-1, College World Series)
In The Pollsย ย  ย
UCLA entered the week unanimously ranked inside the top-10, checking in as high as No. 7 (D1Baseball) and also appearing at No. 8 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll, NCBWA), and No. 9 (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball). Washington enters the weekend unranked, but received votes in two of the last three coaches polls (Mar. 6, Mar. 13).ย

The All-Time Series Against Washingtonย ย  ย
UCLA owns a 56-30 record all-time against Washington, including a 32-20 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins are seeking their first series win over the Huskies since 2019, dropping sets in 2021 and 2022 (the two did not meet in 2020). UCLA has won three of its five home series against Washington over the last 10 years (2013, 2015, 2019).ย

Last Year Against the Huskiesย ย  ย
The Bruins absorbed a three-game sweep in Seattle last year, but rallied to defeat Washington in the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament:
  • Game 1 โ€” UCLA scored in the first inning, but allowed four home runs in a 7-1 game one loss. Jake Palmer (2-4) and Kenny Oyama (2-3) both had multi-hit games for the Bruins. The game was played on Saturday as part of a doubleheader after being re-scheduled due to rain on Friday.ย
  • Game 2 โ€” Washington clinched the series with a narrow 5-4 win in the Saturday nightcap. The two teams traded four-spots in the middle innings, but Washington plated a single run in the sixth that proved decisive. Duce Gourson and Carson Yates both had RBI singles during the Bruins' four-run rally, with additional runs coming in on a bases-loaded HBP from Daylen Reyes and a Kyle Karros sac fly.
  • Game 3 โ€” UCLA was edged, 4-3, in the series finale. Washington scored a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth to claim the walk-off win. UCLA never trailed until Cam Clayton's walk-off base hit ended it.
  • Game 4 (May 26, 2022 at the Pac-12 Tournament) โ€” UCLA collected a season-high seven doubles in a 14-8 win over Washington in the Pac-12 Tournament. The result marked the Bruins' first-ever win in the league tourney. Kyle Karros (5-5, 4 RBIs) and Michael Curialle (4-6, 3 R) accounted for half of the Bruins' hit production, and both doubled twice. UCLA scored on five of the six pitchers used by Washington. Kelly Austin and Alonzo Tredwell teamed up for 4 1/3 innings of two-run relief after a back-and-forth start to the game.ย
Current Bruins Against Washingtonย ย  ย
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Huskies include Kelly Austin (3.18 ERA, 5 K in 5.2 IP), Duce Gourson (7-15, 3 R in 4 GP), Kyle Karros (.318 BA, 6 RBIs in 7 GP), and Carson Yates (6-12, 3 RBIs in 3 GP).ย

Friendly Confinesย ย  ย
The Bruins are an undefeated 12-0 in home games at Jackie Robinson Stadium so far this season. Only three teams in the country have a better home record than the Bruins entering the weekend. UCLA has widely outperformed its opposition at JRS, slashing a collective .307/.439/.485 (compared to .216/.272/.345 for opponents) while posting a plus-78 run differential (110-32). On the pitching side, the Bruins have a 1.75 team ERA at Jackie (opponents: 9.09) with a 135-97 advantage in strikeouts. Six Bruin regulars are hitting over .300 in home games, with Jack Holman (.472/.543/.778) and Kyle Karros (.412/.500/.647) proving especially-tough outs.

Bruins On the National Leaderboardsย ย  ย
To this point in the season, UCLA ranks near the top nationally in a number of statistics on both sides of the ball:
  • ERA โ€” 2nd (2.38)
  • BB/9 โ€” 3rd (2.55)
  • K-BB Ratio โ€” 4th (4.18)
  • WHIP โ€” 7th (1.09)ย
  • Shutouts โ€” 9th (3)
  • H/9 โ€” 20th (7.25)
  • K/9 โ€” 37th (10.6)
  • Walks Drawn โ€” 44th (112)
Controlling the Zoneย ย  ย
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-67 walk differential this season (112 drawn, 45 issued), good for seventh in the country. UCLA is one of just two schools with 100+ walks drawn and fewer than 50 issued (Tennessee).

Digging the Long Ballย ย  ย
UCLA has hit 25 home runs so far this season over 18 games, while allowing just 16. The Bruins are a near-spotless 12-1 when hitting at least one home run. Junior outfielder JonJon Vaughns leads the team with seven roundtrippers, while Duce Gourson (six), Kyle Karros (four), and Cody Schrier (three) have also left the yard plenty. UCLA hit a home run in eight consecutive games to start the month of March.ย

Strong Startersย ย  ย
UCLA has consistently drawn first blood against its opponents, scoring first in 11 of 18 games to start the year and going 11-0 in those contests. In the first three innings of games, UCLA is outscoring its opponents 46-13, including an especially-lopsided 24-3 margin in the first inning alone.ย

Familiar Faces Out of the 'Penย ย  ย
UCLA right-handed relievers Cody Delvecchio (13 appearances, fourth) and Chris Aldrich (12 appearances, 10th) both rank among the national leaders in pitching appearances this season. UCLA is one of just two schools in the country (Radford) that has multiple pitchers with a dozen-plus appearances this season. Luke Jewett (10), Charles Harrison (nine), and Jake Saum (eight) have all seen plenty of action in relief as well.ย

Testing Dariusย ย  ย
UCLA catcher Darius Perry enters the weekend with the most caught stealing (6) of any catcher in the Pac-12. He has thrown out exactly half of his attempted base stealers against (6-12), making him the only primary catcher in the league with a success rate against of 50% or lower (WSU's Jacob Morrow is next at 5-9, 56%). After throwing out a runner in three of four games from Mar. 5-12, Arizona did not attempt a single stolen base all weekend against him. He has two games this season with multiple CS (Feb. 25 at Vandy, Mar. 12 at Oregon).ย
