UCLA Takes Series Opener Over UC Davis, 3-2

LOS ANGELES โ The No. 19-ranked UCLA baseball team logged a 3-2 victory over UC Davis in Friday night's series-opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins (20-9-1) yielded a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but blanked the Aggies (11-18) the rest of the way.
UCLA potted a single run in three frames, with Jarrod Hocking and Carson Yates hitting solo home runs to tie it up before Jack Holman gave the Bruins the lead for good with an RBI double in the seventh.
A trio of Bruin pitchers combined to hold UCD off the board for the final eight innings of the game.
Starter Jake Brooks bounced back strong from that two-run first, allowing just a pair of hits over the remainder of his six-inning outing. He posted a trio of 1-2-3 innings, and faced the minimum in four after rolling up a 6-4-3 double play in the fourth to eliminate a one-out single.
Sophomore lefty Ethan Flanagan followed with two dominant innings of relief, striking out five and allowing just one baserunner on a walk.
Freshman righty Cody Delvecchio allowed a leadoff infield single in the ninth, but retired the next three batters in succession to notch his second save of the year.
Hocking was the Bruins' top offensive performer on Friday, going 2-3 with a home run and a double. The freshman outfielder got the Bruins on the board in the third inning, hitting a 3-2 offering over the wall in left-center for his first-collegiate roundtripper.
Yates followed with a solo shot of his own in the fifth, again taking UC Davis starter Bryan Green deep to left-center.
He scored the go-ahead run as well for the Bruins, leading off the seventh with a bloop single over the second baseman before scoring from first after Holman ripped a line drive over the first baseman and into the right field corner.
UCLA and UC Davis continue the series on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
