UCLA Tops UC Davis, 8-2, to Clinch Series
April 15, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 19-ranked UCLA baseball team clinched its series over UC Davis with an 8-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins (21-9-1) never trailed in the game, opening the scoring with a two-spot in the second and holding on to the lead all game.
That two-run second started a streak of three consecutive scoring innings for the Bruins, who took control of the contest after a grand slam from sophomore shortstop Cody Schrier in the fourth made it 7-1. The two teams traded single runs in the late innings to complete the scoring.
Sophomore right-hander Alonzo Tredwell allowed just one earned run on five hits over his six-inning start, moving to 4-1 on the year. He limited the Aggies (11-19) after allowing leadoff hits in the first and third innings, allowing just one run combined over those two frames.
The Coto de Caza, Calif. native was dominant in the even innings, going three-up, three-down in the second, fourth, and sixth. He picked up a pair of Backwards-Ks in that 1-2-3 second.
The Bruins received strong performances out of the bullpen from Finn McIlroy โ who got three straight groundouts in the seventh โ and Charles Harrison โ who got three straight outs after inheriting a two-on, no-out jam in the eighth โ to finish off the game.
UCLA opened the scoring in the second, as Jack Holman (four-pitch walk) and Darius Perry (bloop single) reached to lead off the inning before scoring on a sac fly and an RBI single from JonJon Vaughns.
Holman brought in the eventual game-winning run in the next inning, taking UC Davis starter Alejandro Huezo deep to center field for a two-out solo home run.
The Bruins then put the game out of reach in the fourth on Schrier's grand slam. The Bruins loaded the bases with nobody out to set up Schrier's blast, with Carson Yates singling and Malakhi Knight doubling before the Aggies opted to intentionally walk Vaughns after he worked to a 3-1 count.
Schrier unloaded on the first pitch he saw from Huezo, lining it inside the left field foul pole for his sixth roundtripper of the year.
The San Clemente, Calif. native was one of four Bruins with multiple hits on Saturday, joining Kyle Karros (2-5), Perry (2-4), and Knight (2-2, RBI).
UC Davis was paced by left fielder Nick Iverson, who went 1-3 with a double and a sac fly.
UCLA and UCD conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live through Pac-12.com.
