UCLA Drops Series Finale to UC Davis, 6-3
April 16, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 19-ranked UCLA baseball team suffered a 6-3 loss to UC Davis in Sunday's series finale.
The Bruins (21-10-1) had previously clinched the series with wins in game one and two, ultimately out-scoring the Aggies (12-19) by a margin of 14-10 for the weekend.
UCLA drew first blood on Sunday after rallying for a single run in the third, but UC Davis responded with crooked numbers in each of the next two frames to build a 5-1 lead they would not relinquish.
Each of the top six batters in the order recorded at least one hit for the Bruins, including a two-hit afternoon for junior third baseman Kyle Karros, who opened the game's scoring with an RBI single to plate freshman left fielder Jarrod Hocking.
Hocking added an RBI knock himself in the seventh, and sophomore first baseman Jack Holman got the Bruins within three after launching a solo home run to right field in the eighth, but UCLA would get no closer.
Senior righty Kelly Austin took the loss for UCLA after yielding five earned in four-plus innings. He cruised his first time through the lineup, facing the minimum through three innings, but the Aggies got to him for three in the fourth. The visitors would tack on two more in the fifth after Austin had left the game to drive in what turned out to be the game-winning runs.
Sophomore right-hander Chris Aldrich did a good job of limiting the damage after inheriting a bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the fifth, rolling up a double play with his very first pitch. Freshman right-hander Cody Delvecchio posted two scoreless frames to finish off the contest.
UC Davis was led by catcher James Williams III, who went 3-4 with two RBIs, and DH Leighton Helfrick, who was 2-4 with two RBIs.
Williams III's triple in the fourth set the table for UCD's go-ahead rally, and he also singled home a run in the fifth. Leadoff man Damian Stone added a solo homer in the seventh.
UCLA wraps up a four-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting UC Irvine for a midweek battle at 6:00 p.m. PT. That game will be streamed live through Pac-12.com.
