UCLA Drops Midweek Decision to UC Irvine

April 18, 2023 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – No. 22 UCLA dropped a 12-4 midweek contest to UC Irvine on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Bruins (21-11-1) got on the board in the fifth anything after rallying for a pair of runs, but by that point the Anteaters (22-11) had built a 10-0 lead.

UCLA was paced on the mound by junior right-hander Caedon Kottinger, who delivered a standout 2 2/3 innings of relief.

The Reno, Nev. native was summoned in the fifth inning, and after allowing an RBI single proceeded to induce a double-play ball that put an end to an eight-run frame for UCI.

Kottinger didn't allow a hit over the remainder of his outing, striking out the side in order in the sixth before yielding just a walk in a scoreless seventh.

UCI plated single runs in the second and fourth innings to build an early lead, then grabbed control with an eight-run fifth. That rally was dotted by seeing-eye and infield singles until Jo Oyama knocked in three with a double into the left field corner.

Duce Gourson (sac fly) and Kyle Karros (RBI groundout) drove in the Bruins' two runs in the fifth inning. UCLA had previously loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and an infield single from Malakhi Knight.

Gourson added a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to close the evening's scoring.

Making his first start of the 2023 season, sophomore lefty Ethan Flanagan allowed just one earned run and one hit over three innings of work. He struck out a pair.

UC Irvine was led by first baseman Anthony Martinez, who went 3-4 and scored a pair of runs. Oyama's double was UCI's lone extra-base hit of the game, though all nine starters scored a run and eight of nine had at least one hit.

UCLA hits the road for its next eight games, starting this weekend with a three-game Pac-12 set at USC. The series – which will be televised in its entirety by the Pac-12 Networks – begins on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. PT.
