The Week In Review
UCLA is 2-2 over the last week, winning two of three at home against UC Davis before dropping a Tuesday game to UCI:
  • The Bruins rallied for a 3-2 win over UC Davis in a series-opening win on Friday. The Bruins trailed 2-0 after one, but held the Aggies off the board the rest of the way. Jarrod Hocking and Carson Yates hit solo homers to bring the Bruins level, and Jack Holman put UCLA up for good with an RBI double into the right-field corner in the seventh. Jake Brooks was dominant after the two-run first, allowing just two hits over the remainder of his outing. Ethan Flanagan and Cody Delvecchio combined to shut down the UC Davis offense over the final three innings of the game.
  • UCLA clinched the series with an 8-2 Saturday win. The Bruins never trailed, opening the scoring with a two-run second and building a 7-1 lead by the fourth. Jack Holman and Cody Schrier hit key homers to the power the Bruins' win. Holman hit a solo shot to center in the third to produce the game-winning run, and Schrier hit UCLA's first grand slam of the year an inning later to take control of the game. Alonzo Tredwell got the win with six innings of one-run ball, and Finn McIlroy and Charles Harrison followed with scoreless relief innings.
  • UC Davis salvaged the weekend with a 6-3 win on Sunday. The Bruins drew first blood after rallying for a single run in the third, but UCD went ahead for good with multi-run rallies in each of the next two frames. Each of the top six hitters in the lineup recorded a hit for the Bruins, including a 2-4 day for Kyle Karros. Jack Holman hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to get UCLA within three, his second consecutive game with a roundtripper.
  • For the weekend, UCLA out-scored UCD 14-10 with marked advantages in batting (.278-.217), slugging (.464-.326), ERA (3.33-5.04), and pitching strikeouts (25-12).
  • UCLA dropped a 12-4 decision at home to UC Irvine on Tuesday. The Anteaters plated single runs in the second and fourth before using an eight-run fifth to go ahead 10-0. Duce Gourson had three RBis for the Bruins, and Daylen Reyes was 2-4 in his first game since Mar. 12. On the mound, Caedon Kottinger led UCLA with 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, getting a key double play to bring an end to that big fifth before striking out the side in order the next frame. Ethan Flanagan (3 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 K) was a tough-luck loser in his first start of the 2023 campaign.
In The Polls
UCLA entered the week ranked in three of the five major national polls, checking in at No. 22 in each of the D1Baseball, USA TODAY Coaches, and NCBWA polls. The Bruins were unranked in the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls.

The All-Time Series Against USC
Though USC holds the the advantage in the all-time series, UCLA has turned the tide in recent years. In 19 years under head coach John Savage, UCLA has lost the season series to USC just three times. The Bruins captured weekend sweeps of the Trojans six times in that span, most recently in 2018. UCLA has won each of the last four matchups against USC in the finale of the semi-annual tournament co-hosted by the two schools (last loss: 2018).

Current Bruins Against the Trojans
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Trojans include: Ethan Flanagan (3.1 IP, 0 R, 5 K), Jake Saum (7.2 IP, 2.35 ERA, 10 K), Alonzo Tredwell (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R), and JonJon Vaughns (.300/.588/.900, 2 HR, 7 BB in 6 GP).

Last Time Out Vs. USC
UCLA finished off an unbeaten run through the Southern California College Baseball Classic by defeating USC 5-3 on Sunday, Mar. 5. The Bruins never trailed in the contest, as JonJon Vaughns hit a two-run homer in the second to put the Bruins up for good. USC didn't get on the board until the sixth inning, and UCLA immediately responded in the bottom half of that inning to make it 5-1. The Trojans made it a two-run game in the ninth off a Nate Clow homer, but that was as close as they would get. Kelly Austin pitched out of trouble to get through 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run. UCLA limited USC to a 1-10 line with runners in scoring position.

Last Year Against the Trojans
UCLA dropped two of three to USC at home last season (Mar. 11-13, 2022):
  • UCLA got the game-tying run to the plate in the ninth but couldn't pull off the comeback in a 7-4 Friday loss to USC. The Bruins had opened the game's scoring in the first, but the Trojans took control with a four-spot in the second. Jake Brooks was excellent from there on out for UCLA, giving up just one hit after the second inning. Kenny Oyama made a career-high eight catches in left field over the course of the game.
  • UCLA posted four crooked numbers, including three in a row starting in the fourth, en route to a 11-2 Saturday win against the Trojans. Michael Curialle (3-4, 3 RBIs) was the Bruins' offensive standout, with Cody Schrier (2-5, 2 RBIs) and Ethan Gourson (1-3, 2 RBIs) also contributing heavily. Led by a five-inning start from Max Rajcic, UCLA pitchers allowed no earned runs in the game.
  • The Bruins couldn't battle back from a five-run first inning by USC in a 6-3 rubber match loss on Sunday. UCLA got the leadoff batter on in six of nine innings, but couldn't get a clutch hit. Darius Perry (2-3) and Kenny Oyama (2-4) both had multiple hits for UCLA.
Controlling the Zone
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-85 walk differential this season (179 drawn, 94 issued), good for eighth in the country. UCLA's 94 walks issued are the fourth-fewest in the country.
