No. 19 UCLA Tops UC San Diego for Sampras Webster's 500th Win
April 18, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ It was a milestone Tuesday afternoon for the No. 19 UCLA women's tennis team, which defeated UC San Diego 5-2 at Los Angeles Tennis Center for head coach Stella Sampras Webster's 500th career victory.
In her 27th season at the helm of the UCLA women's tennis program, Sampras Webster possesses an overall record of 500-184 (.731). Her latest win represents the Bruins' sixth in seven matches.
Sasha Vagramov clinched the victory for UCLA (12-6, 5-4 Pac-12). Also triumphant in singles play for the Bruins were Kimmi Hance, Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and Elise Wagle. All four also earned doubles wins. The Tritons (9-14, 1-7 Big West) picked up points by way of singles victories from Naomi Nguyen and Ella Pachl.
The nation's sixth-ranked doubles tandem of Hance and Wagle claimed its sixth straight decision in dominant fashion, earning a 6-0 win versus Kelly Leung and Ella Pachl on Court 1. Vagramov and Catanzarite then doubled up Katelyn Vu and Rachel Wagner on Court 2 for their second clincher as a pair. The Court 3 match was also finished, with Lutkemeyer and Fangran Tian outlasting Nguyen and Sophie Pearson 7-5. Lutkemeyer and Tian have won seven contests in a row.
Lutkemeyer quickly added to the lead in singles play, dispatching of Vu by a 6-0, 6-2 margin on Court 5. The singles victory represents Lutkemeyer's 20th of the season going back to fall tournament action.
Playing on the third singles court for the first time in her career, Wagle recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win opposite Grace Gamal to put UCLA one point away from the deciding fourth. UCSD momentarily cut into its deficit on Court 6, where Nguyen bested Caroline Goldberg 6-1, 6-2.
The Bruins quickly regained control of the match and Vagramov revisited her frequent role of clincher. Vagramov, who will be honored Friday as part of Senior Day festivities, has delivered the fourth point 14 times in her career after downing Pearson 6-1, 6-2 on Court 4.
No. 106 Hance added to UCLA's lead on Court 1, beating Leung 6-3, 6-2. Hance has twice won on the top singles court, both in 2023. The final result of the day went to the Tritons and Pachl, who overcame Catanzarite 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(8) on Court 2.
Friday marks the regular-season finale for the Bruins, who host crosstown rival USC at 1:30 p.m. PT. Seniors Goldberg and Vagramov will be honored prior to the Pac-12 contest.
