UCLA Head Men's Volleyball Coach John Speraw
John Speraw Named MPSF Coach of the Year
April 25, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
ย
ย UCLA Head Coach John Speraw was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year in a Tuesday announcement by the conference office. Speraw, in his 11th season as the head men's volleyball coach of the Bruins, will lead his team into next week's NCAA Men's Collegiate Volleyball Championship Tournament after producing a 29-2 record this season and capturing the program's first MPSF Tournament crown since 2006.
ย
ย The 2023 Bruinsย were awarded the top seed into the NCAA tournament after completing an unbeaten conference schedule, achieved by only four other teams in MPSF Volleyball history. UCLA has won 19 straight regular-season MPSF matches over the past two seasons. This year, the Bruins dropped a total of just three sets through 14 matches against leagueย opponents, including two sweeps in the conference tournament.
ย
ย UCLA has won as many as 29 matches on the season for the first time since it went 29-5 in 2000. The last time it won more than 29 contests was in a 31-1 1995 season in which Speraw, then a Bruin player, helped lead his team to the NCAA title.ย The 3-0 win over Stanford in the MPSF Championship marked the 20th Bruin sweep of the season, the most for the program since the 1998 squad also had 20.
Through the MPSF Tournament, the Bruins lead the nation with a .381 team hitting percentage and 2.89 blocks per set, and rank third in aces per set (1.97). On the heels of last season's 22-5 mark, the Bruins have registered the program's first back-to-back 20-win seasons since doing so in 2013 and 2012 when it posted 22 and 21 wins, respectively. Earlier this season, Speraw notched career win No. 400 as a men's collegiate head coach and his 200th victory as UCLA's head men's volleyball coach.
ย
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Bruins placed an all-time record five players on the All-MPSF first team. This is Speraw's third MPSF Coach of the Year honor (2012 & 2006 at UC Irvine). Speraw's recognition this year represents the fourth all-time MPSF Coach of the Year award for UCLA (Al Scates-1998, '97, '94).
ย
Speraw and the Bruins will begin the quest for the program's 20th national title in an NCAA semifinal match on May 4 at 2 p.m. PT against the winner of the Long Beach State โ Grand Canyon Opening Round battle. That match will be streamed by ncaa.com. The National Championship match will be aired by ESPN2 on May 6 at 2 p.m. PT. George Mason University, in Fairfax, Va., is this year's host ofย the championship event.
