The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA is 1-3 over the last week, dropping three to California before recovering for a midweek win over Cal State Fullerton:
  • The Bruins fought back from an eight-run deficit to get the game-tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but ultimately dropped a 10-7 decision to Cal in Friday's series-opener. The Golden Bears built an 8-0 lead on the strength of four home runs, but the Bruins began to charge back in the fifth. Jack Holman had the biggest part in UCLA's comeback effort, lofting a grand slam to right-center as part of a five-run sixth.ย
  • Cal clinched the series with a 9-2 win on Saturday. The Bruins plated single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to get within two runs at 4-2, but the Golden Bears pulled away with a five-run ninth, hitting three solo homers in that frame. Jack Holman homered for the second straight game to lead the Bruins, while Daylen Reyes had a couple knocks, including an RBI single that got UCLA on the board in the seventh.
  • Similar to the first two games in the series, UCLA saw a late comeback effort come up short in a 9-8 Sunday loss. The Bruins briefly led after Holman hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 5-4 in the Bruins' favor, but Cal responded with a three-spot in the next half-inning to retake a lead they would not relinquish. The Bruins scored in both the eighth and ninth, making it a one-run game and getting the tying and go-ahead runners aboard, but Cal's Tucker Bougie ended up striking out the side to escape with the win. UCLA had 14 hits as a team in the contest, with Holman (3-5), Daylen Reyes (3-6), and Duce Gourson (3-3, reached five times) collecting multiple knocks.
  • UCLA finished off its midweek slate with a 10-2 win over Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. The Bruins got it done on both sides of the ball, scoring their most single-game runs in over a month while six pitchers combined to throw a three-hitter. The Bruins never trailed after opening the scoring with a six-run third, a rally highlighted by a grand slam from Jarrod Hocking. Jack Holman later homered, while Josh Hahn chipped in a two-run single in the seventh. All nine of UCLA's starters reached base, and five finished with multiple hits. Michael Barnett was UCLA's most-effective pitcher, drawing the start and going nine-up, nine-down over three innings. Finn McIlroy later retired eight in a row to pick up the win, and JonJon Vaughns tossed a scoreless seventh in his collegiate pitching debut.
The All-Time Series Against Oregon Stateย ย  ย
UCLA owns a 45-42 record all-time against the Beavers, including an 21-30 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have taken two of three in each of the last three weekend meetings between the two schools, including a series win last year that represented the Bruins' first in Corvallis since 2010.

Last Year Against the Beaversย ย  ย
  • UCLA and OSU played five times last year, with the Bruins taking two-of-three in Corvallis (May 19-21, 2022) before splitting a pair of contests at the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz.:
  • Game 1 at OSU โ€” UCLA won 4-1 over OSU in a Thursday series opener. Max Rajcic delivered six innings of one-run ball, and the Bruins never trailed after Cody Schrier doubled and scored in the first inning. Charles Harrison and Alonzo Tredwell finished off the combined three-hitter.
  • Game 2 at OSU โ€” The Bruins won the series with a 7-4 Friday win. The bullpen threw five scoreless innings while Jake Palmer (2-4, two runs, RBI) and Carson Yates (go-ahead three-run homer in the second) did the heavy lifting offensively. Tredwell notched a save for the second consecutive game, while Charles Harrison also delivered three scoreless frames out of the 'pen.ย
  • Game 3 at OSU โ€” UCLA closed the series with a 9-3 loss. The Bruins trailed just 2-1 after two innings, but OSU pulled away from there. Yates and Palmer both had RBI singles as part of a two-run seventh inning.ย
  • Game 4 (May 28 at Scottsdale Stadium) โ€” UCLA topped OSU 25-22 in the wildest game of the tournament, forcing a re-match with OSU for the right to advance to the Championship Game. UCLA erased a nine-run deficit in the ninth inning, with the first nine batters of the frame reaching before an out was recorded. Kenny Oyama scored from third on a chopper to first, beating the throw home, to tie it up at 21-21. In the tenth, Tommy Beres hit a walk-off three-run homer to end it (his only career HR). It was the most combined runs in single-game program history, and the Bruins' 25 hits were their most in a single-game since 2008.
  • Game 5 (May 28 at Scottsdale Stadium) โ€” The Bruins and Beavers engaged in another back-and-forth battle in the second game of the divisional final, played just an hour after the first, with OSU notching a 8-7 walk-off win in the ninth. UCLA battled back from a large deficit in this contest too, as OSU led 5-0 after two.
Active Bruins Against OSUย ย  ย
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Beavers include: Duce Gourson (6-20, 4 RBIs in 5 GP), Charles Harrison (2 H, 0 R, 4 K in 4 2/3 IP), Jack Holman (2-4, 2 BB, 2 RBIs in 2 GP), Kyle Karros (.387/.474/.548, 6 RBIs in 8 GP), and Daylen Reyes (8-17, 2 2B in 6 GP).

Controlling the Zoneย ย  ย
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-102 walk differential this season (242 drawn, 140 issued), good for eighth in the country. There are just nine teams nationwide with a walk differential above the century mark. UCLA's 140 walks issued are the seventh-fewest in the country.ย

Strong Startersย ย  ย
UCLA's loss on Mar. 31 to WSU was a rarity, as it marked the first time this season the Bruins lost a game in which they scored first (they had gone 12-0 in such games to that point). Overall this year, UCLA is out-scoring its oponents 31-18 in the first inning of games. The Bruins have gone 10-1 this year when plating a run(s) in the first inning.ย

Familiar Faces Out of the 'Penย ย  ย
UCLA's Cody Delvecchio enters the weekend with the second-most pitching appearances in the country at 32. The freshman righty has allowed a run in just seven of those 32 appearances, and had a 0.74 season ERA through his first 28 games. Chris Aldrich (26 appearances, 17th) has also seen plenty of work out of the bullpen.ย

Holman HRsย ย  ย
Sophomore first baseman Jack Holman has hit a home run in each of UCLA's last four games, making him the first Bruin to homer in four consecutive games this millennium. The last Bruin with such a streak was Bill Scott, who homered in a school-record seven straight games in 1999. Some UCLA sluggers with three-game homer streaks in the 21st century include Chase Utley, Garrett Atkins, and Michael Toglia. Holman has a team-high 12 HRs on the year, the most single-season bombs by a Bruin since Michael Toglia had 17 in 2019.

Testing Dariusย ย  ย
UCLA catcher Darius Perry enters the week with by far the most runners caught stealing (18) of any catcher in the Pac-12, six more than runner-up Caleb Lomavita (California). Perry's 45% runners caught stealing rate (18-40) also leads the Pac. In fact, no other league backstop is above the 40% CS threshold. Perry has thrown out multiple would-be basestealers in four of UCLA's last five weekend series, including a career-high three in one game alone against USC on Apr. 22.ย

Four is the Magic Numberย ย  ย
So far this season, four has been the magic number for Bruin pitchers in locking down wins. UCLA is 21-2 this year when allowing four runs or fewer, compared to a 4-17-1 mark in games allowing five or more.ย

Friendly Confinesย ย  ย
The Bruins have posted an 18-7-1 record in home games to this point in the season, winning 13 consecutive contests at Jackie Robinson Stadium to open the campaign. UCLA has widely outperformed its opponents at JRS, slashing a collective .288/.395/.437 (compared to .247/.312/.391 for opponents) while posting a plus-74 run differential (186-112). On the pitching side, the Bruins have a 3.53 team ERA at Jackie (opponents: 6.93) with a 265-215 advantage in strikeouts. Four Bruins regulars are hitting over .300 in home games, with Kyle Karros (.357/.439/.500), Duce Gourson (.340/.471/.468), and Jack Holman (.352/.426/.714) proving especially-tough outs.
