Yanez Shuts Out Stanford, Bruins Advance to Pac-12 Title Game

May 12, 2023 | Softball

TUCSON, Ariz. โ€“ Brooke Yanez tossed a dominant, complete-game shutout to lift the No. 1 seed UCLA softball team to a 1-0 victory over No. 4 seed Stanford in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals at Hillenbrand Stadium Friday night.
ย
Second baseman Savannah Pola played the hero for the Bruins (52-4, 21-3), knocking in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning with a single into left field. Yanez's performance marked her first seven-inning shutout of the season and first against a top-10 opponent since blanking No. 7 Arizona back on May 8, 2021.
ย
Yanez and Cardinal starting pitcher NiJaree Canady went toe-to-toe for five scoreless innings to begin the game. The Bruins' second ace was lights outs after allowing Stanford's first two batters of the game on base. The left-hander proceeded to retire 16 consecutive batters until River Mahler reached on a dropped third strike.
ย
Yanez totaled six strikeouts, allowed no walks and gave up just two hits in her 16th win of the season. Only one Cardinal reached scoring position. Yanez quickly erased the first-inning threat with a lineout double play made by Rachel Cid at third base.
ย
Canady was just as dominant with eight strikeouts across her five innings. After Canady struck out the side in the fourth and sent two more Bruins down on strikes in fifth, Stanford head coach Jessica Allister made a move to the bullpen for Alana Vawter to open the sixth inning.
ย
UCLA pounced early on the Cardinal reliever by taking advantage of two defensive miscues in the middle infield. Maya Brady led off the inning with a hot shot that bounced off shortstop Emily Young's mitt and into the outfield. The next play, Young went for the force out, but River Mahler was unable to handle the throw at second base.
ย
Aaliyah Jordan stepped into the batter's box next. The seventh-year veteran fell into an 0-2 count and called for time to tie her shoes and take a deep breath. Two pitches later, Jordan advanced Brady 60 feet to third base on a deep flyout into center field.
ย
Savannah Pola, who saw 18 pitches in her two previous at-bats against Canady, dug in as fireworks from Arizona's graduation commencement exploded in the background. Pola's RBI single was all the run support Yanez would need.
ย
Yanez completed her most impressive outing of the season with a lineout to Brady at shortstop.
ย
UCLA will play No. 3 seed Utah in the first-ever Pac-12 Softball Tournament Championship game Saturday night at 7 p.m. (PT) on ESPN2. Mark Neely and Danielle Lawrie will be on the call.
