Ten Bruins Selected to Academic All-District At-Large Teams

Ten Bruins were named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® At-Large Teams, which recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom.
 
Three members of the UCLA men's water polo squad – Gianpiero Di Martire, Gabe Discipulo and Evan Rosenfeld – were selected to the Men's At-Large Team, along with men's volleyball NCAA champion Ethan Champlin and golfer Pablo Ereño. The Women's At-Large Team features five Bruins from five different sports – Caroline Canales from women's golf, Mia Glinn from rowing, Emma Malabuyo from gymnastics, Abby Van Winkle from beach volleyball and Ava Johnson from women's water polo.
 
Redshirt sophomore Di Martire was second on the UCLA men's water polo team and 11th in the MPSF in scoring with 43 goals during the 2022 season. The attacker from Naples, Italy led the Bruins and was seventh in the league in assists with 32 and paced the Bruin offense with 75 points. The business-economics major is a three-time Pac-12 Fall All-Academic Team member and a second-team All-MPSF performer in 2022. He has also twice been named to the MPSF All-Academic Team and has earned ACWPC All-Academic honors three times.
 
Discipulo scored 14 goals and led the Bruins and was third in the MPSF in exclusions drawn with 46 during the 2022 campaign. The senior center and sociology major from Santa Cruz, Calif., was the Elite 90 Award winner in 2021 and an honorable mention All-MPSF selection in 2020. The four-time ACWPC All-Academic honoree is also a three-time MPSF All-Academic Team member and has been named to the Pac-12 Fall All-Academic Team three times.
 
Champlin, a business-economics major from Oceanside, Calif., helped lead the Bruins to the 2023 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship. The junior outside hitter was a first-team AVCA All-American and All-MPSF selection this season, as well as a member of the MPSF All-Academic Team. Champlin produced 14 double-digit kill matches during the year, including a career-high of 19 kills in a win at Pepperdine, and also tied his career-best with six block assists in two matches. Champlin was credited with a career-best 12 digs in the NCAA title match win over Hawai'i. He rated 21st in the NCAA with a .349 attack percentage for the 2023 season and was 31st in the NCAA in aces per set average (0.36).
 
Ereño, a sophomore from Madrid, Spain, ranked second on the UCLA men's golf team with a 72.3 scoring average and was the only Bruin to compete in all 28 rounds and nine events this season. He recorded the second top-10 finish of his collegiate career at the highly competitive Southwestern Invitational, where he tied for ninth with a score of -1, 215 (71-69-75). He notched his other top-20 spot of the 2022-23 season at the following tournament at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, where he finished -3, 213 (71-70-72).
 
Graduate student Rosenfeld scored 12 goals for the Bruin water polo team in 2022 and earned ACWPC All-Academic honors for the fifth time in his career. A utility from Thousand Oaks, Calif., the former MPSF Tournament MVP (2021) is also a four-time MPSF All-Academic Team member, a three-time ACWPC All-America selection and a three-time All-MPSF performer. The two-time Pac-12 Fall All-Academic Team member was also selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team twice in his career (2018 and 2021).
 
Canales finished her sophomore season in 2022-23 with her first Pac-12 All-Conference nod of her career. She ranked second on the women's golf team with six top-10 finishes and a 72.9 scoring average across 31 rounds. Canales was one of two Bruins to compete in every tournament this season. The Calabasas, Calif. product won the first medal of her collegiate career at The Match in the Desert on Jan. 23, shooting the lowest round of the season by a Bruin with a 7-under 65.
 
Glinn competed in UCLA's top two varsity eight crews during her junior season. The junior from Cayucos, Calif. primarily rowed four seat in the Bruins' V8+ crew in 2023, helping lead UCLA to a first-place finish on the first day of the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla. She also rowed four seat in UCLA's varsity eight boat against LMU, at the Dexter Lake Invitational and at the season-culminating Pac-12 Championships in Lowell, Ore. Glinn, who is majoring in psychobiology, has been a strong contributor through three seasons in Westwood and was honored on the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll as a sophomore in 2022.
 
Johnson tallied a career-high 35 goals to finish sixth on the women's water polo team in scoring during the 2023 season. The graduate center from Walnut Creek, Calif., was second on the team and ninth in the MPSF in exclusions drawn with 33. The three-time ACWPC All-America selection was named Second-Team All-MPSF, and First-Team All-NCAA Tournament this season. She is a four-time MPSF All-Academic Team selection.
 
Malabuyo, a sophomore communication major from Milpitas, Calif., earned first-team All-America honors on the balance beam this season after a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The 2020 U.S. Olympic alternate contributed season-highs of 9.975 on balance beam and 9.950 on floor exercise. During her freshman season, she scored a perfect 10 on balance beam and earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors on the event. Malabuyo is a 2022 WCGA Scholastic All-American and 2023 Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll selection.
 
Graduate student Van Winkle became UCLA Beach Volleyball's all-time leader in career wins during the 2023 season, finishing with an overall record of 128-34. A native of San Clemente, Calif., she is a two-time AVCA All-America selection and was named to the second team in 2023. An AVCA Top Flight Award recipient from court two this year, Van Winkle was named the 2023 Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year and was named first-team All-Pac-12 for the second time in her collegiate career.
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 21 (men) and June 22 (women).
