UCLA Edged in Cal Finale, 9-8

May 07, 2023 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Leadoff hitter Max Handron hit a pair of home runs to lead California to a 9-8 win over UCLA on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The top three hitters in the Cal (21-23, 9-15 Pac-12) lineup combined to hit four home runs in the contest, with catcher Caleb Lomavita and center fielder Rodney Greene Jr. each hitting key homers for the visitors as well. The result clinched a weekend sweep for the Golden Bears.

UCLA (24-19-1, 10-12-1) briefly led on Sunday after sophomore first baseman Jack Holman launched a three-run homer in the fifth inning to make it 5-4 in the Bruins' favor, but Cal responded with a three-spot in the next half inning and never surrendered the lead.

The blast marked Holman's third consecutive game with a home run and was his team-leading 11th on the season.

The Bruins clawed back in the late innings to make it a close game, getting the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but they ultimately came up short.

Trailing by three entering the ninth, UCLA got each of its first three batters aboard after a leadoff base hit from freshman center fielder Jarrod Hocking followed by back-to-back walks.

From there, Cal reliever Tucker Bougie fell behind 3-0 to the next batter, but recovered to get the strikeout. Junior second baseman Daylen Reyes then shot a base hit up the middle to plate a pair and put the tying run on third, but Bougie eventually struck out the side to escape with the one-run win.

Four different Bruins had multi-hit efforts on Sunday, including three-hit days from Holman (3-5, four RBIs, two runs), Reyes (3-6, two RBIs), and sophomore shortstop Duce Gourson (3-3, reached base five times).

UCLA is next in action on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. PT, hosting Cal State Fullerton in the team's final midweek game of the 2023 campaign.
