Bruins Throw Combined Three-Hitter in 10-2 Win Over Titans
May 09, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA baseball team closed out its 2023 midweek slate with a 10-2 win over Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins (25-19-1) never trailed after opening the scoring with a six-spot in the third inning, as six pitchers combined to throw a three-hitter for UCLA. The Bruins end the year with a 6-4 record in midweek competitions. ย
All nine of UCLA's starters on offense reached base at least once, with Jarrod Hocking (3-4, four RBIs) leading the way.
The freshman center fielder had the biggest hit of UCLA's six-run rally, lining a 3-2 offering from CSF reliever Seth Tomczak over the wall in left-center for a grand slam that capped the inning's scoring. It was Hocking's second-career homer, and first grand slam.
Junior second baseman Daylen Reyes sparked that third inning with a one-out triple into the right-field corner, scoring JonJon Vaughns from first. Reyes would come around moments later on a Darius Perry RBI bloop single before two more Bruins reached to load the bases and set up Hocking's blast.
Sophomore first baseman Jack Holman (2-4, three runs) hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, his fourth consecutive game with a home run. The team's leader in home runs this season with 12, he is the first player to homer in four straight games at UCLA under head coach John Savage (since 2005).
Senior DH Josh Hahn (2-3, two RBIs) capped UCLA's scoring with a two-run single in the seventh.
UCLA used a total of six pitchers in the contest, with all but one holding the Titans off the board.
Freshman right-hander Michael Barnett was the most effective, drawing the start and going nine-up, nine-down over a three-inning outing. He fanned the first two batters he faced before inducing mostly-weak contact from the next seven batters.
Freshman righty Finn McIlroy was also strong out of the bullpen, going 2 2/3 scoreless. He yielded a double to the first batter he faced, but bounced back to retire the next eight batters in a row. He was rewarded with the win, moving to 2-0 on the year.
Freshman right-hander James Hepp closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, needing just seven pitches to retire the side in order.
Also of note, Vaughns โ UCLA's primary right fielder โ made his collegiate pitching debut, tossing a scoreless seventh.
UCLA concludes a seven-game homestand, and its 2023 home schedule, this weekend by hosting No. 15 Oregon State. The three-game set starts on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. PT and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.ย
