June 21, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
UCLA men's volleyball standout Ethan Champlin was named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Men's Division I Academic All-America® At-Large Team, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. Champlin was voted by the CSC membership to the third team after helping lead UCLA to the 2023 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship.
Champlin, a business-economics major from Oceanside, Calif., was a first-team American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American and All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) selection this season. The outside hitter was also named to the MPSF All-Academic Team. Champlin, who was a finalist for the Karch Kiraly Award which is presented to the nation's best outside attacker in Division I-II men's volleyball, produced 14 double-digit kill matches during the year, including a career-high of 19 kills in a win at Pepperdine. He was credited with a career-best 12 digs in the NCAA title match victory over Hawai'i. He rated 21st in the NCAA with a .349 attack percentage for the 2023 season and was 31st in the NCAA in aces per set average (0.36) after compiling multiple aces in 14 contests during the year. The junior also recorded multiple blocks in 18 matches, with a season-high of six. Champlin totaled 14 matches with at least five digs and was one of the primary passers on the team.
The title victory brought home NCAA men's volleyball championship No. 20 for the UCLA program, and the first since the 2006 season. UCLA finished the season with a record of 31-2 which marked the most wins since the 1995 Bruins went 31-1 and also captured the NCAA title. The Bruins ended the season with 12 straight victories to register the longest streak by the program since the 2006 National Champs won the final 14 contests on the way to the title. The Bruins also secured the program's first MPSF Tournament Championship since 2006 to earn the league's automatic bid into the 2023 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship Tournament. UCLA was ranked No. 1 in the final AVCA Coaches Poll.
