LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's golf team announced its 2023-2024 schedule Monday morning. The Bruins, led by second-year head coach Armen Kirakossian, have four fall tournaments and eight spring tournaments, including the Pac-12 Championships, scheduled.
UCLA opens the 2023-2024 season one month from now at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. from Sept. 18-19. The Bruins last competed at the event in the fall of the 2014-2015 season when they secured a share of the team title.
UCLA wraps up its fall schedule with three tournaments in the month of October at the Hamptons Intercollegiate from Oct. 2-3 (Maidstone Golf Club/East Hampton, N.Y.), the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational from Oct. 13-15 (The Golf Club of Georgia/Alpharetta, Ga.) and The Cal Poly Invitational from Oct. 30-31 (The Preserve Golf Club/Carmel, Calif.).
Then-freshman Omar Morales was the only participant on this year's squad the last time the Bruins competed at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Fall 2021.
Notable spring tournaments on the Bruins' schedule include the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club which is aired on the Golf Channel from Jan. 29-31 and The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park from March 28-30.
UCLA makes its return to the 51st Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Course on April 12-13. The Bruins have won three team titles at the Thunderbird Collegiate, last coming in 1998.
Two weeks later, UCLA returns to Arizona for the Pac-12 Championships at Desert Forest Golf Club. The Bruins look to add their sixth Pac-12 title and first since 2006.
This year's UCLA squad is led by juniors Omar Morales and Pablo Ereño and graduate Mason Greene. Morales led the Bruins with a 72.2 scoring average a year ago and made waves this offseason, competing in his first major championship at the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club. Morales won his first collegiate medal last season at the El Macero Classic.
Ereño ranked second behind Morales with a 72.3 scoring average and was the only Bruin to compete in all nine events in 2022-2023. His best performance last year came at the Southwestern Invitational where he posted a top-10 finish, tying for 9th at 1-under (71-69-75).
Joining the team are three freshmen: Luciano Conlan (Kaneohe, Hawaii), Alex Papayoanou (The Woodlands, Texas) and Luke Powell (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Papayoanou enters this season after an impressive runner-up performance at the 96th R&A Boys' Amateur Championship at Ganton Golf Club last Sunday, Aug. 20. Powell captured the 2023 CIF State Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course his senior year.
