LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA (11-0) advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 Overnght MPSF Invitational with a 15-11 win over No. 4 Pepperdine (10-2) on Saturday afternoon at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. UCLA improved to 85-31-1 in the series history against the Waves.

The Bruins had eight players score in the contest, led by a season-high five goals from senior Rafael Real Vergara. Two other Bruins had multiple-goal efforts as redshirt freshman Frederico Jucá Carsalade had two goals while freshman Marcell Szécsi had his third hat trick of his young career.

Senior Garret Griggs got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying seven saves to go with three steals while surrendering 11 goals.

UCLA won the first period, 3-2, on the strength of its international arms. Jucá Carsalade, Szécsi, and Real Vergara all scored a goal in the opening eight minutes.

The Bruins dominated the second quarter, 4-1, to take a 7-3 lead into the break. The quarter was highlighted by two more scores from Szé and one goal apiece from redshirt sophomore Eli Liechty and redshirt freshman Ben Larsen.

The two teams battled to a 4-4 draw in each of the third and fourth periods. The Bruins enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 15-8 after a penalty conversion by Jucá Carsalade with 3:23 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Waves scored the last three goals of the game to provide the 15-11 final.

UP NEXT: The Bruins will take on #3 USC in the second semifinal of the Overnght MPSF Invitational today at 6:30 p.m. at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Admission is free.
