Fontes Hat Trick Leads UCLA to 4-0 Win over Long Beach State

September 07, 2023 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Graduate midfielder Sunshine Fontes recorded her second collegiate hat trick, leading No. 4 UCLA to a 4-0 victory over Long Beach State.

Fontes scored the first of her three goals in the 17th minute. Defender Ayo Oke played a ball to forward Reilyn Turner, who sent a perfect cross into an unmarked Fontes on the left side. Fontes one-timed it past Long Beach State goalkeeper Zora Standifer to give UCLA a 1-0 lead. Her second goal of the game came on a penalty kick in the 57th minute to put the Bruins up 3-0. Turner drew the penalty after she got ahead of the defense after receving a long ball over the top from Lilly Reale and was fouled in the box by Standifer. Fontes converted the penalty, her second successful penalty kick of the season. Goal number three was a left-footed stunner from outside the box to the upper right corner in the 80th minute to provide the final margin of victory.

Fontes has two hat tricks in the last two years. Her first came on Aug. 25, 2022 against CSUN. She has totaled 20 career goals and leads the team with four goals this season. ย  The Bruins (4-1) also benefited from a timely substitution in the 41st minute. Just 90 seconds after entering the game together, Michaela Rosenbaum, Taylor Cheatham and America Frias combined on the Bruins' second goal of the game. After Frias passed to Cheatham on the left side, Cheatham sent in a cross to Rosenbaum in the box. Rosenbaum boomed a one-timer into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. UCLA outshot Long Beach State (4-3) by a 14-4 margin. Bruin goalkeeper Neeku Purcell made one save while earning her third shutout of the season.

"If you defend really well, you'll get better attacking chances, and some of our goals came from great defensive moments, which allowed us to win the ball higher on the field," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "What I liked tonight about our chances is we only had 14 shots, but it seemed like all of them were critical chances as opposed to half chances."

The Bruins will next play at CSUN on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 4pm.
