WAIMEA, Hawaii – The UCLA men's golf team shot a 10-under 278 in the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani North Course on Thursday. The Bruins are in a tie for 12th and sit 16 strokes back of first-place North Carolina (-26, 262).
Seventeen out of 20 teams shot under par in round one. Oklahoma State's Preston Stout is the clubhouse leader after 18 holes, shooting a bogey-free 10-under 62 with eight birdies and one eagle. Stout shot an 8-under 28 on the back nine.
UCLA's top golfer on day one was junior Pablo Ereño who recorded a 5-under 67. Ereño totaled seven birdies before ending his round with a double bogey on the par-4 18th. He is in a tie for 12th.
Freshman Luke Powell shot a 4-under 68 and is tied for 22nd. Powell is now tied with Omar Morales for the team lead in sub-70 rounds with nine. Powell's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 7th.
UCLA freshman Luciano Conlan, who is competing individually, shot a season-low 3-under 69.
Junior Omar Morales rounded out UCLA's counting scores with a 1-under 71. Morales is tied for 65th in the 124-player field. Sophomore Kyle An shot an even-par 72 with four birdies.
