LOS ANGELES – The No. 18 UCLA women's tennis team defeated Arizona State 4-0 Friday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center, running its winning streak to six in the process. The Bruins have also won each of their first three Pac-12 matches by way of shutout.
UCLA (8-3, 3-0 Pac-12) recovered from an injury retirement early in doubles play, with Elise Wagle completing the sweep. Wagle, Tian Fangran and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer each won on the singles and doubles courts. The Sun Devils dropped to 8-7 (0-3) overall.
ASU's Marianna Argyrokastriti and Emilija Tverijonaite got credit for the win when No. 66 Ahmani Guichard and Sasha Vagramov were forced to bow out on Court 3. On the top court, Tian and Wagle raced out to a 4-0 lead against Chelsea Fontel and Patricija Spaka and never looked back en route to a 6-1 victory. That turned all eyes toward Court 2.
The match between Lutkemeyer/Kimmi Hance and Rachel Hanford/Sara Svetac stayed on serve until the Bruins broke for a 5-3 advantage. An ensuing hold gave the pair its fourth win in as many tries and secured the day's first point.
UCLA took all six first sets in singles play, with Lutkemeyer and No. 62 Tian each prevailing by a 6-0 margin. Tian would repeat her performance in the second, blanking Chelsea Fontenel for the Court 1 contest. Tian ran her team-best personal singles winning streak to six.
Lutkemeyer saw herself down 2-5 opposite Hanford on Court 5, but rebounded emphatically. The final five games went to the Bruin for a 6-0, 7-5 decision.
The deciding point came on Court 4, where Wagle held off Svetac 6-2, 6-4. Wagle has now clinched a team-high three victories on the year.
The Bruins return to action Saturday, when Arizona visits LATC. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
