Nastrini is the 92nd Bruin all-time, and 29th coached by John Savage to make his MLB debut

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox on Monday announced that they have called up former UCLA standout right-handed pitcher Nick Nastrini, putting him in line to make his Major League debut later today.

Nastrini, a fourth-round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft, is slated to start for the White Sox tonight in their home game against the Kansas City Royals. First pitch is scheduled for 4:40 p.m. PT.

When he makes his debut, he'll become the 92nd UCLA baseball player all-time to reach the Majors, and the 29th coached by current UCLA head coach John Savage.

He is the fifth member of UCLA's historic 2019 team – the Bruins won a school-record 52 games and were ranked No. 1 in the country for 12 consecutive weeks – to reach the Majors, joining Garrett Mitchell (Milwaukee Brewers), Michael Toglia (Colorado Rockies), Ryan Kreidler (Detroit Tigers), and Matt McLain (Cincinnati Reds).

Every UCLA team from 1965-2021 has had at least one player compete in MLB, a span of 57 consecutive years.

A fourth-year pro, Nastrini has posted solid numbers throughout his Minor League career. Over 61 appearances (all starts), he's posted a 15-10 record, 3.99 ERA, and 353 strikeouts over 252 1/3 innings. His best season arguably came in 2022, when he fanned 169 batters in just 116 2/3 innings while limiting opponents to a .180 batting average.

A San Diego native, Nastrini was a three-year starting pitcher for the Bruins from 2019-21, compiling a 4.73 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 66 2/3 innings. He posted a 12.8 strikeouts per nine innings rate during his Bruin career. Nastrini burst onto the scene with a 1.37 ERA during his freshman season, and followed up a COVID-abbreviated sophomore year by posting a team-high 13.8 K/9 ratio as a junior in 2021.
