LAS VEGAS โ The UCLA women's tennis team shined in its final event before the start of dual-match play, as three individuals were unbeaten in their singles draws and one doubles pair secured a title at the Freeman Memorial Championships. UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex provided the setting as Bruins were joined by participants from No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 10 Florida and the host Rebels.
In her first action with UCLA, freshman Bianca Fernandez earned a singles title. Sophomore Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer and junior Elise Wagle were each unbeaten in their singles draw. Singles consolation crowns were secured by Ahmani Guichard and Kimmi Hance. The doubles tandem of Guichard and Lutkemeyer also had a championship run.
Fernandez knocked off three ITA top-100 counterparts to become the Bellagio Draw's last player standing. She debuted with a straight-set win against No. 60 Ayumi Miyamoto before downing No. 96 Janice Tjen of Pepperdine in three. A 6-1, 6-0 showing versus No. 53 Lucia Peyre of Oklahoma State capped Fernandez's performance.
Lutkemeyer and Wagle both reached Aria Draw final, but each finished her run opposite a player from another team. Lutkemeyer beat No. 79 Anna Campana of Pepperdine in the quarterfinals and No. 62 Safiya Carrington of Oklahoma State in the added match. Wagle and Lutkemeyer both beat Carrington and Florida's Malwina Rowinska.
Guichard and Lutkemeyer did not drop more than three games in any of their doubles matches. The final saw the Bruins take six of seven games against UNLV's Cindy Hu Coco Zhao.
After dropping a three-set result to No. 77 Nikki Redelijk of Pepperdine in the Bellagio Draw, Hance bounced back to defeat Florida's Qavia Lopez and Tjen. Guichard, who started in the Venetian Draw, was elevated to the Aria Draw for the consolation final. There, she downed Oklahoma State's Kristina Novak 7-5, 6-3.
