LOS ANGELES – UCLA graduate student Brooke Schaffer and freshman Lauren Hallaselkä were named Pac-12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week,  it was announced on Tuesday by the league office. The honor is both Schaffer and Hallaselkä's first time receiving the award.

Schaffer earned three event wins in UCLA's 190-106 dual meet win over Utah. She won both the 100 yd. free and 200 yd. free, and helped the Bruins 400 yd. medley relay to a first-place finish. Schaffer took the 100 yd. free crown in 50.36, over a second quicker than the second-place finisher in the dual meet. As for the 200 free, Schaffer again dominated the field, winning in 1:50.11 and beating the field by over a second and a half. The grad student also helped the Bruins kick off the meet with a win in the 400 yd. medley relay in 3:41.70.

Hallaselkä had a stellar weekend as the Bruins hosted the Bruin Diving Invitational and was the class of the field throughout the 3-meter diving competition. The freshman scored 310.20 in prelims before recording a season-best score of 365.10 in the finals. The Helsinki, Finland native took the finals by storm, winning the event by over 50 points. Hallaselkä also placed fifth in the one-meter dive on Friday, scoring 278.40 points in prelims, and 284.25 points in the finals.

The UCLA swim and dive team is next in action in two weeks, facing No. 10 Stanford at the Spieker Aquatic Center in a Pac-12 dual meet on February 2. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. PT.
