MVB Swings Past Morehouse College

The No. 1-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team posted a straight-set win over Morehouse College (0-1) in the second match of Thursday night's doubleheader in the HBCU SoCal Challenge in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the match were 25-9, 25-15, 25-6. It was the 14th straight win for the Bruins who captured wins in the final 12 matches of the 2023 season on the journey to NCAA MVB Championship No. 20.
The Bruins (2-0) were led by hitters Zach Rama and Cooper Robinson who were credited with 10 and 9 kills, respectively. Sean McQuiggan and Micah Wong Diallo combined for nine total blocks to control the net. Luca Curci led UCLA with eight digs. David Flores added 33 set assists while guiding the team to a school-record .822 hitting percentage.
In set one, the Bruins surged to a 7-1 lead behind a couple of Rama aces and kills from Robinson and Matthew Edwards. Robinson kills put UCLA up 12-4 and then 18-7. Rama's swing raised the margin to 22-9. Grant Sloane's ace followed for 23-9. A couple of Morehouse College errors ended the set at 25-9.
UCLA went ahead 9-5 in set two after a Rama kill.. A McQuiggan / Sloane block extended the gap to 13-8. Diallo Wong's kill and then block, with Sloane, made it 17-10. A Robinson spike put UCLA up 20-12. Back-to-back blocks by Flores / Diallo Wong added two more points. A pair of kills by McQuiggan supplied points 24 and 25 in a 25-15 win.
Rama helped serve UCLA out to a 9-0 lead to begin set three. A David Decker kill made it 13-2. Diallo Wong's attack put the margin at 15-3. Another Decker kill and it was 20-5 for UCLA. Robinson's swing put the Bruins ahead 22-5 and a Morehouse service error ended the set at 25-6.
UCLA's previous school record hitting percentage for a match was .666 against LMU in 1984. The previous MPSF record was .667 set by UC Santa Barbara in 2011.
