THE MATCHUP
The UCLA football team (1-5, 0-4 Big Ten) plays its first game in the Tri-State area Saturday, Oct. 19 when it visits SHI Stadium to face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-2, 1-2 Big Ten) in Piscataway, N.J., starting at 9 a.m. PT. The first-ever meeting between the two programs will be televised on FS1. The UCLA Sports Network will provide radio coverage of the contest over AM570 and SiriusXM.

The Bruins are coming off a 21-17 setback to Minnesota at Rose Bowl Stadium last Saturday. UCLA shut out the Gophers in the first half, 10-0, with scores coming from a one-yard TD rush by Keegan Jones on the opening drive and a field goal from Mateen Bhaghani before the break. A 42-yard touchdown strike from QB Ethan Garbers to WR J.Michael Sturdivant โ the Bruins' longest scoring play of the season โ gave UCLA the lead with 6:54 remaining in the fourth quarter. Garbers finished the game with a career-high 293 passing yards (25 of 36). Minnesota QB Max Brosmer hit RB Darius Taylor for the game-winning touchdown pass with under two minutes left in the game. UCLA LB Carson Schwesinger led the Bruins' defense with 13 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. The 4.5 TFLs marked the most by a Bruin since Takk McKinley in 2016. Schwesinger's performance marked his fourth-straight double-digit tackle outing.

WELCOME TO THE FOS ERA
It is a year of change for UCLA football, as head coach DeShaun Foster took the reins at his alma mater Feb. 12, 2024. A member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame for his prowess in the Bruin offensive backfield from 1998-2001, Foster spent seven seasons in the National Football League. He piled up more that 4,500 total yards and 16 touchdowns, including a 33-yard scoring dash in Super Bowl XXXVIII as a member of the Carolina Panthers. Foster spent the previous 11 seasons โ including 10 at UCLA โ in the collegiate coaching ranks before being promoted from associate head coach and running backs coach.

โข LB Carson Schwesinger is the Big Ten leader and ranks second in the NCAA in both solo tackles (47) and solo tackles per game (6.8). Schwesinger is also tied for the Big Ten lead in total tackles (62) and total tackles per game (10.3). He has led UCLA in tackles in all but one game this season (vs. Indiana).
โข Schwesinger has recorded 10-plus tackles in each of his first career starts against LSU (Sept. 21), Oregon (Sept. 28), Penn State (Oct. 5) and Minnesota (Oct. 12) the past four weeks, leading the team with 12, 13, 15 and 13 tackles in each contest, respectively. Schwesinger is the first Bruin to record four straight double-digit tackle games since Kenny Young in 2017. The last five game streak came in 2014, when Eric Kendricks ran off six straight such performances.
โข Against Minnesota, Schwesinger set career highs in sacks (2.0) and tackles for loss (4.5). His 4.5 TFLs marked the most by a Bruin since Takk McKinley in 2016 versus Utah.
โข At Penn State, Schwesinger became just the second Bruin defender over the last six seasons to total 15 tackles in a game (Mo Osling III, 2022) and the first linebacker to accomplish that feat since Kenny Young in 2017 (Nov. 24 vs. California).
โข QB Ethan Garbers threw for a career-high 293 yards on 25 of 36 passing against Minnesota (Oct. 12). It was the third time this season Garbers registered a newย career high for passing yardage. Garbers' 42-yard connection to WR J.Michael Sturdivant in the fourth quarter versus Minnesota marked the Bruins' longest touchdown pass of the season.
โข UCLA's defense held Minnesota scoreless in the first half last week, marking the first time since last season at Stanford they accomplished that feat (Oct. 21, 2023). The Bruins limited the Gophers to a season-low 234 yards of total offense. UCLA also held Minnesota to 41 rushing yards, the fewest allowed by the Bruins this season. The previous low was 51 (at Hawai'i).
โข The Bruins' defense limited Penn State's ground game to a season-low 85 yards, which was the Nittany Lions' fewest since Oct. 21, 2023 (Ohio State). Penn State entered the contest as the Big Ten leader in rushing offense.

UCLA officially joined the Big Ten Conference Aug. 2, ushering in a new era in the Bruins' storied and illustrious athletic tradition. UCLA, along with previous conference foes Oregon, USC and Washington, have moved to an 18-team Big Ten Conference with a footprint spanning from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

UCLA's approaching membership in the Big Ten Conference was initially announced more than two years ago, on June 30, 2022.
