October 20, 2024 | Men's Water Polo
LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA (18-1) shook off a slow start to defeat No. 12 UC Davis (10-10) in overtime, 16-13, on Sunday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. UCLA improved to 21-0 all-time against the Aggies.
The Bruins had a total of seven players score in the contest, paced by five goals from freshman Ryder Dodd. UCLA also had three other players score multiple goals in the win over UC Davis, which included a season-high four scores from freshman Peter Castillo, and two each from redshirt junior Chase Dodd and redshirt sophomore Frederico Jucá Carsalade.
Graduate student Garret Griggs got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying 12 saves and one steal while allowing 12 of the 13 goals. One goal allowed was credited to Ryder Dodd, who was in cap 1B when the Aggies scored at the end of the second period after the Bruins failed on a 7-on-6 attempt.
The Aggies jumped out to a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period and then won the second period, 2-1, to take a 6-3 lead into the break.
But like they did in the win at USC (5-1 in the third) on Saturday, the Bruins dominated the third quarter against the Aggies, winning the third period, 6-1, to take a 9-7 lead into the final stanza.
UC Davis scored on the opening possession of the fourth quarter (7:31) to trim UCLA's lead to 9-8. Junior Gray Carson took a feed from Wade Sherlock to score a power play goal (3:43), extending the lead to 10-8. But the Aggies scored back-to-back goals (2:35 and 1:40) to tie the game at 10-10. UCLA called timeout at 1:40 and ran Adam Wright's drawn up play to perfection with Ryder Dodd scoring off an assist from sophomore Ben Liechty with 1:32 to go. But Tommy Kiesling came up big for the visitors, scoring with just five seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Jucá Carsalade put the Bruins back in front (1:47) in the first overtime period with a power play goal off an assist from sophomore Wade Sherlock. But Kiesling answered with a power play goal for the Aggies (1:11) to tie it up at 12-12. Ben Liechty scored his second (0:41) off a feed from Jucá Carsalade to put UCLA up 13-12 to end the scoring in the first overtime.
Chase Dodd would score the eventual game-winning goal to open the scoring in the second overtime period (2:32) off another assist from Jucá Carsalade to push the lead to 14-12. Castillo would complete his hat trick off a feed from graduate Jack Larsen (1:38) on a power play to make it 15-12. After another goal by UC Davis's Kiesling, Castillo would tack on his fourth goal of the game (0:13) to provide the 16-13 final.
UP NEXT: After a week off for the Bruins, UCLA will return to action and MPSF play with a huge road trip to the Bay Area. UCLA will open at No. 8 California on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. and then conclude with current-No. 1 Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1:00 p.m. PT. Stanford lost to California this weekend so the Bruins will likely return to the top spot.
