UCLA Downs Ohio State, 1-0

October 20, 2024 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – No. 10 UCLA kept its Big Ten regular season title hopes alive after beating No. 15 Ohio State, 1-0, on Sunday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

Senior Jayden Perry scored the game's only goal in the 61st minute on a penalty kick. The Bruins were awarded the penalty kick after Peyton Marcisz drove through traffic in the box. An Ohio State defender stepped in to clear but cleared it off a teammate's arm for a handball in the box. Perry, who entered the game with five career goals, all on penalty kicks, made it six with a perfectly-placed kick that broke the scoreless tie.

Perry and her fellow Bruin defenders shut down the Buckeyes in the second half, allowing no shots in the half and just four in the game. Ohio State had a dangerous look in the 81st minute when Ella Giannola sent in a cross in front of the box, but Bruin goalkeeper Ryan Campbell stepped in to snag it. Campbell had made three big saves in the first half to keep it scoreless. In the 14th minute, she came off her line to make a sliding save on a shot by Kailyn Dudukovich, and she stopped a 22nd minute shot by Ella Giannola. Amanda Schlueter found open space just inside the box in the 36th minute, but Campbell dove to her right to make the save.
After a quiet first half, the Bruins came out with more intensity in the second half, outshooting the Buckeyes by an 11-0 margin and taking a 6-0 second-half advantage in corner kicks. In the 56th minute, Paloma Daubert sent a cross into the box for Quincy McMahon that appeared to bounce off the forearm of an Ohio State defender, but no penalty was called. The Bruins got the call five minutes later, however, and Perry buried the penalty for the game-winner.

Campbell finished the game with three saves and earned her career-best and nation-leading 13th shutout of the season. Pritchard made seven saves for the Buckeyes.

UCLA improves its record to 13-2-3, 8-0-2 in Big Ten play. Ohio State drops to 10-4-3, 5-3-2. The victory sets up a showdown with USC on Sunday, Oct. 27 at Noon in the final game of the regular season for not only Los Angeles bragging rights but for top billing in the conference. The game will be televised live on Big Ten Network.
