Quarterback Ethan Garbers of the UCLA football team earned honors Monday from the Davey O'Brien Award and the Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, following a career performance at Rutgers.
Garbers was tabbed to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list for Week 8, earning a spot on the award's midseason watch list in the process. The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week will be selected from the Great 8 list and announced Tuesday at 10 a.m. PT. The O'Brien honor is the first of Garbers' career.
Eight signal callers were also picked as Manning Award "Stars of the Week." Fan voting is OPEN NOW to determine the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week. Voting closes Wednesday at 7 a.m. PT. The Manning award is also Garbers' first.
Garbers registered single-game career highs for completions (32), passing yards (383), passing touchdowns (four) and completion percentage (32 of 38 passes completed, 84%) in the Bruins' 35-32 win in Piscataway, N.J. His 67-yard scoring strike to running back Keegan Jones in the third quarter also represented a career best. The victory was UCLA's first in Big Ten Conference play.
Garbers accounted for five total touchdowns in the game, also rushing for a 49-yard score in the second quarter. The carry was the longest of his career.
Prior to Garbers Saturday, the only UCLA quarterback since 1980 to complete 30 or more passes at a rate of 80% or better was Dorian Thompson-Robinson (30 of 36 against USC in 2020). Garbers' completion percentage was the fifth highest by a Bruin passer overall during that same span.

It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Since the Manning Award started recognizing Stars of the Week in 2011, 553 different quarterbacks from 134 schools have been recognized. Sixty-six players were honored during the 2023 season and 39 quarterbacks have been recognized so far in 2024.
