ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Spencer Johnson of the UCLA men's tennis team picked up the first Big Ten Player of the Week honor in program history Wednesday after capturing the ITA Southwest Regional Championships singles title in Tempe, Ariz.
Johnson won six singles matches in five days at the Kiwanis Tennis Center, capping his performance with a 6-2, 6-3 win against No. 121 Noah Zamora of UC Irvine in the final. One day earlier, he downed No. 91 Savriyan Danilov of San Diego 7-5, 7-6(2) to earn a spot in November's NCAA Championships. Johnson did not drop a set throughout his latest singles run. He has a 7-1 singles record on the fall.
In doubles play, Johnson and partner Emon van Loben Sels advanced to the quarterfinals. The pair took down David Adamson/Robert Freedman of UC San Diego and Zoran Ludoski/Alexander Rozin of Arizona in the process.
Johnson, who logged team-best records of 23-7 in singles action and 21-10 in doubles matches en route to the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year award, was named Pac-12 Player of the Week once in his debut season.
