Seniors Key UCLA 1-0 Senior Day Victory over Washington

LOS ANGELES - On a night when UCLA honored its senior class, it was, fittingly, senior Quincy McMahon with the game-winning goal in a 1-0 shutout victory over Washington. Senior defenders Jayden Perry and Alice Barbieri held it down on the back line, and graduate goalkeeper Ryan Campbell earned her nation-leading 10th shutout of the year.

McMahon, starting as a forward for the first time, netted her second goal in as many games, taking a pass from Peyton Marciszย and whipping a shot past Washington goalkeeper Mia Hamant to the right corner of the goal at 5:07.
Washington (6-4-2, 3-3-0 in the Big Ten) threatened for much of the first half, outshooting the Bruins, 10-4, in the first stanza. After the Huskies earned a corner kick in the 15th minute, Campbell made a nice snag on a cross in front of the goal to snuff the scoring opportunity. During a frantic 24th minute, the Huskies had several chances in and around the box, including a cross in front of the goal that was headed out by Nicki Fraser and a shot by Anna Menti that was blocked by Val Vargas. However, the Bruins withstood the challenge to keep it scoreless. the Huskies off the board. The Bruin defense also kept Washington scoreless in the 29th minute, blocking a shot by Menti. Tatum Thomason followed up that shot with one of her own but was saved by Campbell.

The Bruins (10-2-2, 5-0-1) turned the tables in the second half, outshooting Washington, 11-5. Sofia Cook was dangerous early in the half, taking a shot that was saved in the 49th minute and then connecting with McMahon a minute later for a shot in front of goal that was blocked. Sunshine Fontes nearly put in a long-distance banger in the 71st minute but just missed wide left, and another long-distance strike by Vargas sailed just high.

The Huskies' best opportunity to tie came in the 68th minute when Thomason hit Kaleah Eichenberger in transition, but Eichenberger's shot missed just wide. Thomason also had an opportunity in the 83rd minute with a shot from the top of the box, but Campbell was there to make the save.

UCLA remains unbeaten in Big Ten play with a 5-0-1 conference mark and will next play at Northwestern on Thursday, Oct. 10.
