St. Louis, Mo. – No. 2 seed UCLA advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final after a 2-0 semifinal victory over No. 6 seed Washington on Thursday's at CITYPARK.
UCLA (15-3-3) got on the board early in the third minute on an own goal. After a corner kick by Bridgette Marin-Valencia was sent to Quincy McMahon outside the box, McMahon drove a long ball in front of goal towards Nicki Fraser that bounced off a Husky defender into the back of the net.
McMahon also had a hand in the Bruins' second goal in the 35th minute. After accepting a pass from Taylor Cheatham, McMahon sent a ball in to senior Ayo Oke in front of goal. Oke put her body on the line to get a foot on the ball and scored while colliding with Washington goalkeeper Mia Hamant.
UCLA's defense stood strong once again, holding the Huskies (10-6-3) to just two shots in the game. Goalkeeper Ryan Campbell recorded her 15th shutout of the year, which ties Katelyn Rowland (2013) for the second-most shutouts in a season by a Bruin.
Much like in the teams' earlier matchup this season, UCLA took the lead early and never relented, with the own goal setting the tone for the game. Campbell was tested just twice in the game, in the 23rd and 24th minutes with long-distance shots by Jace Holmes and Ioanna Papatheodorou, but she sure-handedly made the saves, diving down to stop the Papatheodorou shot.
UCLA maintained possession for most of the game and finished with 19 shots and eight shots on goal. The Bruins outshot the Huskies, 12-0 in the second half.
The Bruins advance to Sunday's final against No. 5 seed Rutgers, who dispatched No. 1 seed USC in penalty kicks in the first semifinal. Kickoff will be at 12pm CT/10am PT, with broadcast coverage on the Big Ten Network.
