UCLA Football Falls at Washington, 31-19

November 15, 2024 | Football

SEATTLE โ€“ The UCLA football teamย (4-6, 3-5 Big Ten) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Friday night at Washington with a 31-19 setback. With the win, the Huskies (6-5, 4-4 Big Ten) extended their home winning streak to 20 consecutive victories at Husky Stadium.

Redshirt senior quarterback Ethan Garbers finished the game with 267 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns, completing 27-of-44 of his passes without an interception. But he was sacked six times and the Bruins lost a pair of fumbles, one by Garbers. The Bruins rushed for only 52 yards after rushing for 211 yards in the victory over Iowa. T.J. Harden rushed for 33 of those yards.

"We didn't come out in the second half and execute," said UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster. "I always tell these guys 'you have to be at your best when your best is needed' and that wasn't the case for us in the second half. We didn't really execute the way that we wanted to. We just continue to shoot ourselves in the foot and when you are playing teams like this at home, and they have that win streak that they have, you can't give them opportunities to continue to come out and make some plays on us. We are still working on finishing. We played an ok first half, but that second half just wasn't our ball. Just not our brand of football so that's how the game got away from us."

Despite the loss, the Bruins outgained the Huskies, 319 to 305 net total yards. Additionally, UCLA allowed a season-low 182 passing yards, marking the second straight week the Bruins' defense set a season-best for passing defense (allowed 185 yards to Iowa last week).

Linebacker Carson Schwesinger again led the Bruins with his seventh double-digit tackle performance, a career-high 17 tackles (10 solo). He has led the Bruins in tackles in eight of 10 games so far this season. His 17 tackles were the most by a Bruin since Jayon Brown recorded 19 against Colorado on Nov. 3, 2016.

The Bruins' offense struggled in the first quarter with three straight punts, the third of which only went for 17 yards before going out of bounds at the UCLA 36. Washington wasted no time capitalizing on the short field possession with a three-play drive that ended on a 15-yard touchdown rush by Jonah Coleman for the first score of the game. The Bruins put together a promising drive at the end of the first period but it stalled inside the red zone with 13:41 to go in the second quarter. UCLA cut the deficit to 7-3 after a 28-yard field goal by Mateen Bhaghani.

UCLA made a great defensive stop on the next possession when UW went for it on fourth-and-one on their own 46. But Oluwafemi Oladejo tackled Adam Mohammed for a one-yard loss to force the turnover on downs. The Bruins soon reached the red zone again, only to see Russell Davis II strip Garbers on third and nine at the UW 17 and recover the fumble to thwart a Bruin scoring chance.

Washington put together a nine-play, 69-yard touchdown drive right after the fumble to build a 14-3 lead. The Bruins looked to have ended the scoring drive with an interception, but a roughing the passer penalty on the play gave the ball back to the Huskies with a fresh set of downs. Three plays later, Will Rogers hit Keleki Latu for a 10-yard touchdown reception with 3:46 left in the first half.

The Bruins immediately went to work on offense with their third-straight appearance in the enemy red zone. But this time, Garbers converted a third-and-five from the UW 9 on a punishing eight-yard run and then hit Kwazi Gilmer from the one for the Bruins' first touchdown of the game to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 0:51 ticks left.
ย
UCLA trailed 14-10 at half but led in total net yards 163 to 156 on a very balanced offensive attack with 19 run and 19 pass plays in the first half. The Bruins recorded 131 passing yards to 125 for UW and 32 rushing yards compared to 31 for the Huskies. UCLA was 5-for-10 on third down conversions and won the time of possession, 18:00 to 12:00.

The third quarter opened with three turnovers in the first four possessions. Washington got the ball to open the second half but Devin Kirkwood intercepted a pass by Rogers and returned it nine yards to the UW 25. Three plays later, the Bruins settled for a Bhaghani 40-yard field goal (11:20) to make it 14-13. It was as close as the Bruins would get.

On the next UW possession, it was Kain Medrano's turn to intercept a pass by Rogers, giving the Bruins the ball back on the UW 39. Washington regained possession after forcing a fumble. The Huskies immediately regained momentum after switching out their quarterback, Rogers, for Demond Williams Jr. But the Bruin defense forced the Huskies to settle for three points after an 11-play, 57-yard drive on a 41-yard field goal by Grady Gross to put UW up 17-13 with 3:16 to go in the third.

The fourth quarter opened with a 44-yard field goal miss by the Bruins to keep the score 17-13 Washington with 10:58 to go.

The Huskies would make it a two-score lead after the miss by UCLA on an eight-play, 74-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard TD pass from Williams Jr. to Decker DeGraaf to put UW up 24-13 at the 5:44 mark of the fourth quarter.

Washington would tack on another touchdown to push the lead to 31-13 on a two-yard rush by Coleman (1:54 to go).

UCLA ended the game with a nice scoring drive of 12 plays and 80 yards. Garbers hit Moliki Matavao for a two-yard reception to provide the 31-19 final. The Bruins' two-point conversion failed after a penalty.

Up Next (vs. USC โ€“ Nov. 23)
The Bruins host the Trojans at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 23. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. PT; the game will be broadcast on NBC.
