Men's Tennis Bruins Reach NCAA Singles, Doubles Quarterfinals

WACO, Texas โ Three members of the UCLA men's tennis team became first-time All-America honorees Thursday after advancing in the NCAA Championships singles and doubles draws.
On Day 3 of the event at Hurd Tennis Center, Spencer Johnson made the singles quarterfinal round with a straight-set win. On the doubles side, Alexander Hoogmartens and Aadarsh Tripathi outlasted their counterparts for a quarterfinal berth of their own.
No. 55 Johnson downed No. 42 Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois 6-3, 6-4 in a morning match. The contest stayed on serve in the first set until Johnson broke for 5-3. Miyoshi would not get a point the rest of the set. Johnson then broke for 3-2 in the second and that proved to be the difference in a 6-3, 6-4 decision.
Johnson next meets Timo Legout of Texas Friday at 8 a.m. PT. Legout beat Arizona's Colton Smith, ranked fifth, in straight sets Thursday.
Hoogmartens and Tripathi continued their hot play together, logging a seventh win without a loss. The latest victory was a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(6) result against Auburn's Billy Blaydes and Will Nolan. After being outlasted in the first set, Hoogmartens and Tripathi countered by taking the second's first three games en route to the equalizer. An emphatic start to the 10-point tiebreaker followed, as the Bruins jumped out to a 4-0 advantage. The Tigers would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Hoogmartens and Tripathi take on No. 17 Benjamin Kittray and Gavin Young of Michigan Friday. The Wolverine pair knocked off No. 23 Stian Klaassen and Oliver Tarvet of San Diego 6-4, 6-0. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
