Top-Seeded UCLA Hosts MPSF Championship Tournament This Weekend

LOS ANGELES โ No. 1 UCLA (21-1, 5-1 MPSFย West) hosts the 2024 MPSFย Men's Water Polo Championship Tournament this weekend (Nov. 22-24) at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.ย The top-seeded Bruins will open with eighth-seeded Washington & Jefferson on Friday, Nov. 22 at 1:45 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed live on Overnght.com with live stats being provided on 6-8Sports.com. You can also follow along with live scoring updates on the Bruins' official account on Twitter|X. The Bruins had a season-high 14 players score in the contest, led by a career-high six goals from redshirt juniorย Grant Loth. Sophomoresย Ben Liechtyย andย Wade Sherlockย each scored a hat trick while redshirt sophomore Frederico Jucá Carsaladeย added two scores.ย Bernardo Mauriziย got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying a season-high 17 saves and three assists while surrendering four goals.
RECAPPING LAST TIME OUT
No. 1 UCLA (21-1, 5-1 MPSF West)ย concluded the 2024 regular season with a 16-9 lopsided win over No. 4 USC (18-5, 2-4 MPSF West) on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins pulled off a three-game regular season sweep of the Trojans to improve to 100-91-1ย all-time against the Trojans.ย The Bruins had a total of 10 players score in the contest, paced by a game-high five goals from freshmanย Ryder Dodd. Redshirt sophomore Frederico Jucáย Carsalade and graduate studentย Makoto Kenneyย each scored two goals against the Trojans.ย Graduate studentย Garret Griggsย got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying a career-high-tying 15 saves and oneย steal while allowing nine goals.
RYDER DODD BREAKS UCLA FRESHMAN SCORING RECORD
Freshman attacker Ryder Dodd (Long Beach, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) has established the UCLA freshman record for goals in a single season with 82, which leads the MPSF in 2024. Dodd surpassed Alex Rousseau's mark of 60 goals during his freshman campaign in 1986. Rousseau is the Bruins' all-time leading scorer with 290 career goals (1986-89). His mark currently sits at No. 2 on the UCLA charts and at No. 15 on the MPSF charts for most goals in a single season.
SCHOOL-RECORD-TYING NINE BRUINS CLAIM 2024 MPSF WEST HONORS
Theย UCLA Bruins had a league-best and school-record-tying nine players earn 2024ย Delfinaย All-MPSFย West accolades as announced by the league office on Nov. 20. The Bruins also had nine players earn league awards in 2023.ย The Bruins swept all three individuals honors for the second straight year with freshmanย Ryder Doddย being named the Player of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year and Head Coachย Adam Wrightย tabbed as the Coach of the Year.
Ryder Doddย (Long Beach, Calif.) enters the postseason with an MPSF-high 82 goals on the year (3.73 GPG), ranking him in the top 15 in MPSF single-season history and second in UCLA history. He also has 25 assists for a conference-leading 107 points. Dodd has scored in all 22 games, with multiple goals in all but one. A four-time MPSF weekly award honoree, earning Delfina MPSF West Player of the Week and S&R Sport Newcomer of the Week twice each,ย Ryder Doddย also owns the UCLA freshman scoring record. In the regular season finale (Nov. 16), he recorded his 14th hat trick of the year with five goals to lead the Bruins to a 16-9 win over No. 4 USC. He led a pair of MPSF road wins at No. 7 California and No. 2 Stanford (Nov. 2-3), helping the Bruins clinch the No. 1 seed in the MPSF Tournament. He scored six goals and drew five exclusions in the 20-14 win at Cal, and scored all four of the Bruins' fourth quarter goals. He scored a career-best eight goals in an 18-12 win at then-No. 7 Pepperdine (Oct. 12).ย Ryder Dodd, the only freshman on the Delfina All-MPSF First Team, is UCLA's sixth all-time MPSF Player of the Year recipient (Rafael Real Vergara-2023, Garrett Danner-2015-16, Scott Davidson-2009, Sean Kern-2000) and is the fourth Bruin to earn MPSF Newcomer of the Year (Ben Liechty-2023,ย Makoto Kenney-2020, Garrett Danner-2013).ย Ryder Doddย also becomes the first-ever MPSF Men's Water Polo player to earn both major awards in the same year.
Wright has guided the Bruins to a 21-1 regular season record and 5-1 in conference play, leading to the MPSF's top seed in the championship tournament. As the top-ranked team for the majority of the season, UCLA posted 17 wins over top 15 ranked opponents, 10 wins over the top 10, and four over the top five. The Bruins allowed double-digit goals in just six of their 22 contests, while reaching that threshold offensively in all but one game. UCLA placed a high of nine players on the 2024 Delfina All-MPSF teams, and became the first in league history to sweep the three major awards for two consecutive years. Wright is 365-67 overall (.845) since taking over the program in 2009. This is the fourth MPSF Coach of the Year award for Wright (2023-24, 2017, 2011), and overall for UCLA Men's Water Polo.

It marks the fourth All-Conference honor for Kenney and the second forย Chase Dodd.ย Three Bruins landed on the Delfina All-MPSF Second Team, which includedย redshirt sophomore Frederico Jucá Carsalade (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), sophomoreย Ben Liechtyย (Newport Beach, Calif.), and freshmanย Peter Castilloย (Costa Mesa, Calif.). It marksย the second time Jucá Carsalade and Liechty have earned All-MPSF accolades in their careers.ย Another three Bruins garnered Honorable Mention All-MPSF honors. THREE BRUINS NAMED TO CUTINOย AWARD WATCH LIST
For the third year, USA Water Polo and The Olympic Club are excited to collaborate with the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) on the Cutino Award Watch List. The Peter J. Cutino Award, named in honor of the late Hall of Fame coach, recognizes the best player in men's and women's college water polo.ย This watch list was created in 2022 in an effort to help promote the college game, awareness of the honor, and the excellent play of athletes around the country. 20 athletes, as submittedย by varsity college coaches around the country, are recognized for their outstanding play. Dodd scored six goals in the 20-14 win at No. 7 California, scoring all four of the Bruins' fourth quarter goals. He finished with five earned exclusions, two assists, and one steal to go with the six goals against Cal. Then in the 13-6 win over No. 2 Stanford, he scored twice and added an assist and a steal, while winning both of his sprints.ย This is the third career MPSF weekly award for Dodd.ย Tauscher helped the Bruins to a pair of MPSF road wins (Nov. 2-3) which included a third-straight win over the Golden Bears and the largest margin of victory in 24 years over the Cardinal. With UCLA leading 14-13 in the third period at No. 7 Cal, Tauscher was subbed in and allowed just one goal in the final 12:30, picking up five saves, five steals, and one assist in the 20-14 win. He then made his first career start in the 13-6 win at No. 2 Stanford, holding the Cardinal to a season-low six goals with a career-high 13 saves. Tauscher enteredย the week having played in only 3.64 games this season.ย This is the first career MPSF award for Tauscher.
PETER CASTILLO NAMED MPSF WEST NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
UCLA freshman utilityย Peter Castilloย (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harborย HS) wasย named the MPSFย West/S&R Sport Newcomerย of the Weekย as announced by the league office on Oct. 21.ย Castillo scored twice in the 13-10 win at No. 3 USC (Oct. 19) and then added a career-high four goals (on four shots) in the 16-13 overtime win over No. 12 UC Davis (Oct. 20). He also had one assist, two steals, and drew three exclusions against the Trojans and then added one field block, one steal, and drew two more exclusions vs. the Aggies.ย This is the first career MPSF award for Castillo.

He turned in two all-around performances to go with his 10 goals, adding four of five winning sprints, four steals (all at Pepperdine), four drawn exclusions, two assists, and one field block.ย This is the second career MPSF weekly award for Dodd, and first as a player of the week.ย Tierney scored four goals on five shots and added one steal against his former team, helping the Bruins to an 18-12 win at No, 7 Pepperdine (Oct. 12). He then scored one goal on two shots in the 10-8 home win over No. 11 Princeton (Oct. 13).ย This is the first career MPSF award for Tierney.

UCLA freshmanย attacker Ryder Doddย (Long Beach, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) wasย named the MPSFย West/S&R Sport Newcomerย of the Weekย as announced by the league office on Sept. 30.ย Doddย accumulated 16 goals on 20 shots (.800), while adding five steals, three assists, drew two exclusions, and won 6-of-7 sprints through a 16-8 win over No. 12 UCSB, a 21-8 win over No. 15 LMU, and a 21-10 win over (RV) Air Force (Sept. 27-28).ย Dodd had a then-career-high five goals vs. UCSB, broke that career-high of six goals on seven shots vs. LMU, before tacking on five more goals against Air Force.ย This is the first career MPSF award for Dodd.
KENNEY NAMED MPSF WEST/DELFINA PLAYERย OF THE WEEK
UCLA graduate attackerย Makoto Kenneyย (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) wasย named the MPSFย West/Delfina Player of the Weekย as announced by the league office on Sept. 23.ย Kenney helped lead UCLA to a 4-0 record this past week, defending its Overnght/MPSF Invitational crown (Sept. 20-22) with six goals and 16 assists for a total of 22 points to match his cap number. The Bruins are the only undefeated team in the MPSF and have won 35 consecutive regular season games dating back to an overtime loss on Oct. 29, 2022.ย He scored a season-high four times and added six assists vs. No. 7 Princeton, and collected two assists and a steal in one half vs. No. 15 UC San Diego. Kenney then had three assists in the 12-7 win over No. 6 Cal, and scored a game-high seven points in the 12-9 title win over No. 3 USC with two goals and five assists. He provided the assist on the eventual title-winning goal. Both of his goals (one each in the second and fourth periods) came as the shot clock buzzer was sounding.ย This is the second career MPSF weekly award for Kenney.
BRINKEMA NAMED UCLA'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Freshmanย Bode Brinkemaย of UCLA Men's Water Polo was selected the Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 18ย for competitions held between Sept. 10-16.ย The freshman tied for the team lead in scoring with four goals, leading top-ranked UCLA to a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams to improve to 6-0 on the year. The Bruins opened the week with a 12-9 win at No. 9 UC Irvine with Brinkema scoring once, picking up one steal, and drawing one exclusion. Then he scored the first hat trick (on just three shots) of his collegiate career in the Bruins' 19-8 home-opening win over No. 20 California Baptist University. He also registered two steals and an assist against the Lancers.
RYDER DODD NAMED UCLA'S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Freshmanย Ryder Doddย of UCLA Men's Water Polo was selected the Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 11ย for competitions held between Sept. 3-9.ย Dodd made a big splash in the opening weekend of his collegiate career, leading top-ranked UCLA in scoring with 12 goals en route to a 4-0 record that included wins over two ranked teams at the Triton Invitational. He scored multiple goals in all four outings, including hat tricks in the first three games. He opened with three goals and an assist in the 13-7 win over No. 11 UC Santa Barbara and followed that with a four-goal, one-assist outing in the 26-7 win over Concordia University Irvine. Then on Sunday, he had another hat trick to go with five assists, two steals, a field block, and drew one exclusion in the 24-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer. He concluded the weekend with two goals in the 15-7 win at No. 12 UC San Diego.

UCLA collected 60 points and five first-place votes in topping the 2024 MPSF Men's Water Polo Western Division Preseason Coaches' poll. The Bruins return seven of their top-eight scorers and a starting goalkeeper from an NCAA runner-up season, including Delfina All-MPSF selectionsย Jack Larsenย (40 goals),ย Makoto Kenneyย (27 goals), and goalkeeperย Garret Griggsย (238 saves, 8.95 GAA). Also returning are MPSF Newcomer of the Yearย Ben Liechtyย (41 goals), Frederico Jucá Carsalade (32 goals), andย Giorgio Alessandriaย (21 goals) from All-Conference Second-Team honors, as are Honorable Mention picksย Ben Larsenย (25 goals) and Marcell Szécsi (23 goals).
RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
The Bruins return four of the five All-Americans from the 2023 season and another All-American from the 2022 season for the 2024 campaign. Olympian Chase Dodd (39 goals in 2022) has returned to campus for his junior season while the Bruins welcome back three super seniors that have decided to utilize their COVID years in 2024 and that trio includes All-Americansย Jack Larsenย (First Team), Garret Griggs (Second Team), and Makoto Kenney (Second Team). ย Ben Liechty, the 2024 MPSF Newcomer of the Year, is back after being named to theย Honorable Mention All-America team last year. UCLA lost the services of Rafael Real Vergara (First Team, 71 goals).
RETURNING ALL-MPSF PLAYERS
Last year, UCLA had a school-record nine players earn 2023 Delfina All-MPSF West accolades, highlighted by MPSF Player of the Year,ย Rafael Real Vergaraย (71 goals, graduated). Of those nine, seven return, highlighted by three super seniors inย graduate attackerย Jack Larsenย (40 goals, returning using COVID year), graduate attackerย Makoto Kenneyย (27 goals, returning using COVID year), and graduate goalkeeperย Garret Griggsย (25 starts, 22-3 record, 238 saves, 8.95 goals against average, returning using COVID year), who were all named First-Team All-MPSF in 2023.ย Sophomore utilityย Ben Liechtyย (MPSF Newcomer of the Year in 2023, 41 goals, leading scorer returning), and redshirt sophomore attacker Frederico Jucá Carsalade (32 goals, returning), were named to the Second-Team All-MPSFย a year ago. Redshirt sophomore utilityย Ben Larsenย (25 goals, returning), and sophomore center Marcell Szécsi (23 goals, returning) both earned honorable mention honors from the league last year. In addition to losing Real Vergara, the Bruins also lost the services of Second-Teamerย Giorgio Alessandriaย (21 goals, graduated).
SUPER SENIORS
Super senior goalkeeper Garret Griggs,ย super senior attacker Jack Larsen, and super senior attacker Makoto Kenney haveย allย decided to return to Westwood for a fifth and final season. The trio have been afforded the opportunity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
PARIS OLYMPIANS JOIN THE BRUINS
Redshirt Junior attacker Chase Dodd and his younger brother, freshman Ryder Dodd, have arrived on campus after winning bronze at the Paris Olympic Games this summer with Team USA and are ready to go for the 2024 campaign.

A CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM
The UCLA Bruins captured their 12th NCAA Championship in men's water polo with a 7-6 win at USCย on Mar. 21, 2021, at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The win also marked the 119th NCAA Championship for the UCLA Athletic Department. It was a balanced scoring effort by the Bruins, who received goals from six different players. Juniorย Jake Cavano, who was named to the 2020 First-Team All-NCAA Tournament,ย scored two goals, including the eventual difference maker with 6:23 left in the game. Sophomore goalkeeperย Bernardo Maurizi, who also was named First-Team All-NCAA Tournament, held the Trojans scoreless throughout the first half and racked up nine saves. UCLA never trailed in the game, though USC briefly pulled even at 4-4. Nicolas Saveljic was named the NCAA Tournament MVP.
THE WRIGHT STUFF
After guiding the Bruins to the NCAA Championship in 2020 and being named the ACWPC National Coach of the Year, Adam Wright returns for his 16th season as UCLA's head men's water polo coach in 2024 with an overall record of 365-67 (.845) and an MPSF mark of 72-25 (.742). His teams earned perfect APR (Academic Progress Rate) scores of 1,000 in 2014, 2015 and 2016 while winning the school's 112th, 113th and 114th NCAA Championships in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Wright added the fourth NCAA Championship to his resume as a head coach in 2020 (Mar. 21, 2021) and a fourth perfect APR score in 2021 and again in 2024. On July 20, 2017, then-UCLA Director of Athletics, Dan Guerrero, announced that Wrightย will guide both the UCLA men's and women's water polo teams. Wright was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame on June 20, 2019, and to the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020. On March 22, 2022, UCLA Director of Athletics, Martin Jarmond, announced that Wright had signed a new six-year contract, starting in July of 2022, as the Head Coach for both of the Bruins' Men's and Women's Water Polo programs.ย

The UCLA Bruins made their 38th appearance in the NCAA Championship in 2023, finishing with a nation's best 26-3ย (.897) record. The Bruinsย fell one win short of the NCAA Championship, falling to California, 13-11, in the finals. UCLAย opened the season with 24 consecutive victories, tying for the third-best mark in school history (1968-70). Wright guided theย Bruins to an unbeaten 23-0 regular season, the first undefeated regular season in the MPSF since UCLA's 2015 team. Eight of UCLA's wins were against MPSFย West teams, including seven against top fiveย competition, and 16 of the 23 overall wins came against top 10 opponents. The Bruins scored in double-digits in all 23 contests, and held opponents to single-digits 16 times. UCLA placed an MPSF-high nine players on the All-MPSF teams in 2023, including four on the first team. Wright was named MPSF Coach of the Year for the third time in his career (2011, 2017, 2023).
