UCLA Women’s Basketball Downs Fresno State, 97-41

November 30, 2024 | Women's Basketball

HONOLULU – UCLA Women's Basketball (7-0, 0-0 Big Ten) downed Fresno State (5-3, 0-0 Mountain West) in the Bruins' second game of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown hosted by the University of Hawai'i.

Junior Lauren Betts recorded her fifth-consecutive double-double in the dominant win; the center had 20 points, 12 rebounds and a block without committing a foul in the game.

UCLA dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 50-24 in the victory. The Bruins limited Fresno State to two offensive boards while collecting 15 of their own. UCLA also came away with 10 steals and five blocks.

Four Bruins got into double-digit scoring by the half; five UCLA student-athletes finished in double figures in a balanced offensive attack. Juniors Kiki Rice (6-9 FG, 3-4 3FG) and Gabriela Jaquez (7-9 FG) scored 15 points in the win. Janiah Barker had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, knocking down a trio of free throws to get her to her final total. Graduate student Angela Dugalic rounded out the Bruins in double figures; the Serbian forward had 11 points (5-6 FG) and seven rebounds in just 17 minutes on the floor.

Betts scored on the opening possession after winning the tip, and the Bruins did not let off the gas after getting out of the gate. UCLA went on a 20-0 run in the first four minutes with six Bruins getting on the board. Dugalic started hot, shooting 3-for-3 with a triple to score seven in the first half of the opening frame. Jaquez picked up a pair of paint scores in the process, and Betts got to the line for an and-one off a Gardiner assist to keep a 16-point lead.

Fresno State fought back, shooting 5-for-9 from long distance in the first period. UCLA led 29-17 after the first buzzer.

Jaquez went on a seven-point run to open the second quarter, converting a pair of layups and a right-wing 3-pointer to help the Bruins maintain their offensive pressure early. Both teams soon fell into a scoring drought; UCLA went 3:26 without a basket. Freshman Kendall Dudley converted a layup in transition to break the scoreless streak. Rice got a three to go, and the point guard found Jones in the corner for another triple to follow. The Bruins doubled up the Bulldogs, 46-23, with three minutes on the clock.

Betts got into double figures after putting back her own miss, and scored through contact in the paint on the next possession. The center had five offensive rebounds at the half. Rice hit a stepback three before Jones found her in transition off a steal; UCLA scored 17-straight points to end the quarter. The Bruins led 57-23 after outscoring the Bulldogs by 22 in the period. Fresno State did not score in live play for 8:47.

The Bruins were in attack mode out of the break, scoring on four of their first six attempts in the third period. Betts got a pair of paint touches to drop; Barker picked up a steal at half court and got an easy layup to go, forcing a Bulldogs timeout. UCLA extended its lead to 40 at the media break (65-25, 3Q; 6:54). Jaquez scored four more out of the break to get to 15 points.

Rice looked comfortable from long range, scoring her third triple on four attempts. Gardiner closed out the quarter with a buzzer-beating floater off an assist from Dugalic. UCLA led 80-33 heading into the final frame.

Freshman Avary Cain got a look to drop from the left corner to start the fourth quarter; the lefty has connected on a triple in both games in Hawai'i. Cain found Dudley down low to break a two-and-a-half minute scoring drought; UCLA led by 51 with five minutes to go in the fourth. The freshman forward ripped the rock away after her next miss; Dudley went 1-for-2 from the line to get to a new career-high nine points.

Barker scored seven-straight for the Bruins, attacking the rim for a pair of close range buckets and scoring three of her six free throws. UCLA led 95-36 with three minutes left. Freshman Elina Aarnisalo got her first basket of the game on UCLA's final scoring play; the Bruins were up 97-41 as the final buzzer rang.
