Men's Tennis Sends Quartet to Pepperdine for Sectionals

MALIBU, Calif. -- The UCLA men's tennis team will begin play Thursday at its final event before the NCAA Championships individual draw is announced later this month. The ITA Sectional Championship for the West Section will be hosted by Pepperdine and continue through Sunday.
Bruins Gianluca Ballotta, Alexander Hoogmartens, Aadarsh Tripathi and Emon van Loben Sels will compete at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. All four student-athletes are in the singles field, while Ballotta and van Loben Sels will team up on the doubles side.
Matches will be streamed through PlaySight on PepperdineWaves.com.
Doubles matches will be contested first each day, starting at 10 a.m. PT. Each participant still in contention will play one contest per day until Sunday, when semifinals and finals are held.
Thursday's first-round pairings and approximate match times have been announced.
• Ballotta/van Loben Sels vs. No. 90 Hiroki Sakagawa/Noah Zamora (UC Irvine) – 10 a.m. PT
• van Loben Sels vs. No. 73 Max Basing (Stanford) – 11:30 a.m.
• No. 104 Tripathi vs. No. 38 Peter Makk (USC) – 12 p.m.
• No. 96 Hoogmartens vs. Nedim Suko (Washington) – 1 p.m.
• Ballotta vs. Timofey Stepanov (California) – 2 p.m.
Six singles players from each section (24) – four semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners -- will qualify for the NCAA singles tournament. Meanwhile, the top three doubles finishers from each section (12) will earn spots in the NCAA doubles draw.
