LOS ANGELES – Redshirt junior linebacker Carson Schwesinger on the UCLA football team was awarded Second Team All-American status by the Walter Camp Football Foundation (WCFF) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The WCFF and AFCA announced its awards Thursday evening and Friday morning, respectively.
The two selectors are included in the five organizations used to formulate the annual consensus All-American teams. Others organizations included are the Associated Press (AP), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and The Sporting News.
Schwesinger was named to the All-Big Ten First Team by the conference earlier this month on Dec. 3. The Moorpark, Calif. native was up for two major awards this season, being named a Butkus Award Finalist, which honors the top linebacker in the nation, and a Burlsworth Trophy Semifinalist, which recognizes the country's best football player who started his career as a walk-on.
Schwesinger led the Big Ten Conference during the regular season in total tackles (136), total tackles per game (11.3), solo tackles (90), solo tackles per game (7.5) and double-digit-tackle performances (nine). Schwesinger's 90 solo tackles, which actively lead the FBS, were the most by a Big Ten defenseman during the regular season in at least the last 22 years.
Schwesinger tallied the first 100-tackle season by a Bruin since 2018 (Adarius Pickett) and first by a UCLA linebacker since 2017 (Kenny Young), finishing with 136 in 2024. Earlier this season, Schwesinger recorded a streak of six straight double-digit-tackle performances, which was the longest by Bruin since Eric Kendricks' Butkus Award-winning 2014 season. At Washington on Nov. 15, Schwesinger recorded a career-high 17 tackles for the most by a Bruin defender since 2016. In UCLA's 20-17 Homecoming win over Iowa on Nov. 8, Schwesinger nabbed the first two interceptions of his career to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Burlsworth Trophy Walk-On of the Week honors. Schwesinger, who drew the first 10 starts of his career in 2024, was UCLA's leading tackler in 10 of 12 games.
